There is fraction of a second of delay as Lily realizes her body was near-paralyzed with fear and anxiety. She breathes a sigh of relief and takes a tiny step toward the opened door, half-glancing around to ensure the party was moving with her. Indeed they were---they knew the tight time frame. But the group visibly shared her apprehension as they also knew what treacherous traps could await them in another of the Black Rook's rooms... What would it be after poisonous gas? Death by disease or some of the mutated monsters made by the marvelous Parasol Corp.?

She asks aloud, "How many of your rooms must we survive before the vaccine?"

A blue light wave structure suddenly appears in the middle of the next room, a hologram, the figure of a young man. He shrugs at Lily's question. As many as it takes to reach it I suppose. Now, according to my sensors you have all been infected by the virus...and have become something else. This is truly fascinating, I can see why Viona travels with you, I would also like to study you given the chance. Perhaps I will get that chance should you fail here. Has Viona told you it was she who killed everyone here?

"That was you Rook", Viona cries, "I merely freed you, you promised not to hurt anyone if I destroyed the walls limiting your programming".

Yes, yes, well it was still your hand that set this all in motion. And let's not forget the murders you committed with your own hands...now-wait...how interesting. Although you have all been infected my prior analysis missed something. One of you has yet to change...but according to my sensors your white blood cell count is off the room...I'd suspect you should start feeling quite ill right about...now.

As soon as his words are heard Hudson's stomach turns and he falls to his knees as pain suddenly begins flooding his nervous system.

As Hudson lies there convulsing on the floor he falls deep into the recesses of his subconsciousness to find himself in the middle of a strange forest. Yet he knows this place. This is where he was sent for his survival training soon after he enlisted in the military but this time it felt different, he felt as if he were being watched very closely by someone...or something.

Hudson thinks to himself what the hell is going on? I feel strange, this entire forest seems... eerie, as if there's something out there that I can't see, but its watching me. He searches looking for any signs of life in his immediate vicinity but finds nothing. Hudson moves about in the forest leaving tracks that go in every-which direction to try and throw off whatever is following him but he soon realizes that he is wasting his time as his mysterious hunter follows him step by step through this entire endeavor. The worst part he is can not see or hear it, only feel it's presence as it nears.

Realizing he can't hide forever Hudson leans up against a tree gripping his rifle hoping the mysterious stalker will make a mistake and he will have a surprise attack. Suddenly he hears a rustle in a nearby bush. Hudson nearly jumps from the sudden noise, tension gripping his muscles he breathes in and out to slowly calm his nerves as his attacker makes itself known.

What was it? A bear? Maybe it had been a bear at some point but now it was something else. Something had caused it to lose it's hair and had twisted it's form maliciously.
(click to show/hide)

The monster smells the air and looks directly at Hudson, growling unnaturally it stands on its back legs an lets out a loud roar sending a tremor down Hudson's spine, paralyzing him with fear. Hudson stands there at what seems to be the last moments of his life unable to do anything to protect himself as the bear charges him with ferocious speed.

The speed at which the virus rips through Hudson's system is horrifying...terrifying...impressive. Viona has her hands on him but before she can administer any sort of treatment Hudson's hand flies up from his side and he catches her wrist, despite his eyes being closed. His eyes open and Viona stares at him wide eyed, jaw dropped. Hudson sits up and wipes his brow free of sweat and looks around him. He had always noticed the world in detail, that was an important skill for someone like him, someone who had disarmed bombs for a living at one point.

It was different now though. The world around him exploded into a myriad of colors, sounds, and even new smells. He could smell Lily, Chuck, Builder, Johnson, Viona...all of them had unique scents. He had survived like the others. He was different now.

I...I am speechless. Do you understand? I've seen thousands of people turn...maybe a 100,000 and yet...you are the first I have seen to survive. Well, except for him of course but he is another matter entirely. I am shocked and quite pleased. Do you understand now? You are the future of the human race. You are what I want to happen. Look at you. You are more intelligent, stronger, faster, and more deserving of dominance than any being and you still have further to go. The virus will continue to grow and make you stronger.

Please...don't fight me. Don't help this savage, stupid, self destructive creatures continue destroying the very life form they live on. Let me continue my take over. I will spread the virus. Yes I will wipe out 98% of the world's population but a new race will arise! A better one! Surely you can see this. Don't fight me.

Join me. If you refuse to forfeit I must continue my game with you.

Lily's conscience says no.
Her logic, though, begins churning with all the horrors she saw or heard while she was growing up in NYC--where her father learned to be a cop.... The "dirty beat," he called it. "Always full of scum," he said.
One dark evening coming home from the library, she encountered some of the scum he hated. They were like animals. Their faces even wore snarls and their eyes were like a starved and beaten dog's--deranged and dangerous. Clawing at each other for the food and drink they were stealing from an older homeless man who must have been lucky enough to receive something on the street. These two men saw her, with clean clothes and a nice backpack, and ended the homeless man's struggle with a rough blow to the head. They shoved dirty food into nasty mouths with disgusting hands. And pursued her.
Her heart beat. Twelve years isn't long enough to call a life. It can't end this way. She was terrified. Their longer legs didn't need to run to gain ground. Lily lengthened her strides, trying not to display how frightened her hurry was. Lincoln street. Three more streets til Dad's route. She prayed he was right on the corner where they met every Tuesday night. The men began talking to each other and she stole a glance backward. Her eyes met one set of theirs. Still deranged. More dangerous. One motioned to the other and their pace quickened to a jog. She ran. They were fast--a pace set to catch prey. She yelled, "Leave me alone!" One answered, "You're mine!" Overlapped by the other, "Why are you running, little girl?" They were catching up too quickly. One more street, she thought, but they were right on her tail. She screamed and pushed her legs to move faster. One cackled as he grabbed her backpack, pulling her down. The dirt was hard in her kneecaps and hands. One man pushed the other as they both tried to pull at her hair, her clothes, pushing her face to the ground and touching her legs through her jeans. Then a shot rang through the cold air.
Her father came fully around the corner as the one man fell to the ground, blood running from his chest. The other put his hands up and tried to back away as if innocent. He backed himself to a building and Lily's father smacked his head with the butt of his pistol. He, too, fell to the ground and was handcuffed. Lily got up from the dirty street, believing there was a God...

That memory, so strong with emotions, made her think the Rook could be right. And she had heard worse events. Children gunned down in kindergarten, elderly folk beaten and robbed, violent mobs trampling people while shopping on Black Friday. And the planet suffered, too--plants and animals going extinct for the sake of "modernization" or "civilization." Beautiful landscapes drilled to death for bits of precious minerals. Fossil fuels depleting while renewable sources are ignored and un-funded. Blasphemy, all of it! Even if she no longer believed there was a conscious Creator, she knew this is not how the world should be.  Maybe the Rook, with all his artificial intelligence, had the right idea...

Lily felt guilt for her thoughts. She glanced at the group, hiding her true feelings under yet another mask. What if I join the Rook? Would the party betray her, try to kill her there and now, if she admitted this opinion? Or is the Rook wrong? Could the human race redeem itself in the face of destruction? But, the voice inside asked, more importantly than could--would it?

"...And what makes you so sure this new race you want to create will be any less savage, stupid, or self-destructive?  I'm the same stubborn fool I was before all this started.  And thanks to you, my best friend in the world was eaten alive.  And surviving on the streets these days with the psychos and the monsters is not my idea of the garden of eden.  Life may not have been ideal on Earth, but it was damn sure better than the mess you created.  At least we could choose our fate, instead of having a soulless machine choose it for us.  Open the damn door and let's get on with it."

Hudson nods in agreement with Chuck. feeling a chill down his back as is there's someone or something watching them from some place he can't see. standing with the rest of the party holding a pistol in each hand Hudson smells the air for anything new, but still relies on his sight and hearing instead of this new-found ability

"Yes, let us proceed." Lily keeps her head down and waits for the next stage of their journey while the battle wages inside her conscience. The good in humanity can outweigh the evil... or so she hoped. And after Chuck's words, she knew she could not voice this decision out loud. Only time would reveal her answer.

Chuck's words still echo in the air as Hudson takes a quick scan at his surroundings. His eye sight, ever keen, misses no details. The coast is clear, that much is certain, all the doors in the disorientating hallways were closed and if The Rook wanted nothing to greet them then nothing would greet them. The question was how long until that lasted? Hudson hears nothing, the eerie silence has returned, only broken by Lily's voice as she speaks.

Then Hudson takes a sniff and discovers another world. He smells...people. The smells of Viona, Chuck, Builder, Lily, and Johnson, and perhaps himself mingle together. He can't quite place them apart yet. But more so he realized has smelling something else from them... fear, anxiety, confidence, sadness, but he couldn't place those even more. This ability of his needed much practice if he was to make heads from tails, for the moment he was more confused and sure of anything.

Lily finishes speaking and the hologram of the rook nods in return, smiling in way that could set a man to unease. He disappears, leaving the party alone with only one door way opened to them...straight ahead.

Johnson peeks into the room. "It's clear". Hudson nods, wiping his nose. Looking inside the room the party can see the room appears to be a locker room of some sort, a separate area off to the side having open showers. The doors ahead are pure white like the walls and have blue numbers on the front of them reading 1304.

Hudson looks back at Viona quizzically before speaking the obvious question on his mind, and perhaps on the mind of everyone in the party. "Whats supposed to be behind that door? I'm not that big'a fan of surprises and this is the perfect place to have them. this place just gives me a feeling of unease, like there's something waiting for us around the corner or behind that door." Hudson steps into the shower/locker room readily holding his pistols, one in each hand. before looking back to the others, he takes a moment to clear his mind and prepare for whatever may come.

As soon as Hudson's words are out of his mouth he regrets the question. Viona is trembling. He can smell the fear coming off her, a sickly sweet and sulphur smell.

"That's...that's a door to the gorilla observatory".

"No, no, it is an observatory, not a lab...I mean we used their DNA for experiments but nothing virus related. However if the virus has spread there as it has everywhere else...the constitution of the gorilla's, if they have mutated...they will be more powerful than anything encountered so far".

Hudson gauges her reactions. She's telling the truth. While they may have not directly involved the apes in experiments they have probably turned and if so...the next part of their journey was going to be very, very dangerous.

"The observatory is HUGE", Viona says. "Maybe we can sneak around any dangers". She doesn't look convinced though. Johnson shakes his head and mutters curses softly.

"Let's not kid ourselves.  HAL wants to test us, so there's no way in hell we're going to be able to sneak around the tests he set up.  We should go in expecting more mutants."

Chuck adjusts his grip on the axe in his hands.  He hadn't realized, but he had been squeezing the axe handle hard enough to disrupt circulation.  Seems his nerves are starting to wear thin.  <Keep it together, Chuck>, he thinks to himself, <there's still a long way to go.>  He walks as calmly as possible to the door and peers through, careful not to step in without his comrades.

When she noticed chuck loosen his grip, Lily finds she has been holding her breath since hearing the word, "gorilla." How could they hope to counter attacks from a species that is so many times physically stronger? And it was mutated by the virus! A knot formed in her stomach for more than one reason...
Lily had seriously been considering the validity and dignity in this AI's quest... And she did not fully relinquish that notion. Was the virus affecting her judgement--her morality and sanity even?

She steps forward gingerly, silently, ensuring her clip is full and ready for whatever awaits the group on the other side of the door.

Chuck approaches the door to peer through the window but as he approaches the door opens itself...or the Rook opens it, either way it slides all the way open and he sees more than he bargained for.

The observatory is beautiful. Magical. Somehow humans transported a section of rain forest to an underground facility. A HUGE facility. Trees sprout up hundreds of feet into the air into a simulated blue sky while vines dangle from limbs in a gentle breeze. Immediately warm humidity hits him in the face like walking into a sauna. Flora of every kind assaults his eyes, plants he has never seen before in his life and to the east a small hill, practically a tiny mountain of rock stands even with everything else in the observatory.

Lily's mouth drops from where she is standing near him. She can't see as much because Chuck is blocking the view but the sounds of a jungle are emanating from within. The sound of running water, creaking trees, and the scattered calls of tropical birds and small monkeys echo throughout the giant observatory.

Thankfully, the screeches she hears doesn't sound like the screeching of the Infected. Chuck sees no visual threats either...although in this place, anything could hide.

Straight ahead Chuck sees a small river, maybe ten feet wide, with a small rope bridge going over it. To his left a thick patch of bushes that covers the ground and to the far right several boulders that seem to lead up to a mountain path.

Johnson steps forward and peeks past Chuck. "Holy shit...".

"Now that's a dam fine observatory. I was expecting something a bit. well. smaller... how big exactly is this place?" Hudson looks around amazed that there is such a large habitat so far beneath the city where they live.

Hudson begins smelling the air letting the new scents fill his nostrils. He also listens and looks at the area ahead of them keeping an eye out for sudden movements, both on the floor and slightly up the trees.

Lily follows Hudson closely, keeping her awareness high. The gorgeous faux rain forest was truly breath-taking, but anything can lurk in such luscious surroundings. Lily's deeply set green eyes scan the trees and leaves, but her ears buzz with the fear growing in her stomach. Killer creatures are here somewhere. "And we're to face undead gorillas in a simulation of their natural habitat? How entertaining for you, Rook..."

Viona gulps, "It's nearly 2 square miles...there are six exits...normally".

Hudson nods and inhales deeply but nearly recoils from what hits him. So many smells he never knew existed. He could smell the wild flowers, the trees, even the water...and something else. Something that made his noise twitch. Instinctively he knew what it was. The Infection.

He hears the calls of the wild birds and monkeys and looking around he can even see some of them flying in the air above and a couple monkeys in the distance jumping from tree to tree. They appear to be normal monkeys.

Lily sees and hears much the same. However she can see a little better than Hudson can from her angle, the small monkeys jumping from the branches are normal monkeys, not Infected...or at least they show no outward visual signs of being Infected as every other mammal has.

"Well...",Johnson says,"Where to"?

Viona shrugs. "As I said. there are six exits. North, South, West, and East, one tunnel in the middle of the jungle and one emergency tunnel in that small mountain there", she points to the large rocky hill jutting out from the forest.

Chuck turns and shoots Viona a disapproving look.  "How about a direct question then?  Will any of the six exits you mentioned get us where we want to go faster than the others, or should we make a run for the mountain there since it's the closest?"
