Builder's words drops the jaw of both soldiers behind Johnson but the Sergeant only stands there with a thoughtful look on his face.

"A nuke"? One of the soldiers cry out, "But that'll wipe out the whole city! I have family here"!

"I don't understand", the other soldier remarked, "I thought we were holding back the main forces of infected here...if the virus has spread to the city...then it's all been for nothing...", he seems to regret his words immediately, glancing at his fellow soldier who now looks distraught.

Sergeant Johnson's eyes widen and his face turns hard. He spins on the soldiers. "Straighten up men! Or have you forgotten you are men? This has not been for nothing! We've pushed this far and we WILL get the vaccine". His confidence seems to be infectious too. The men immediately go into military positions of ease, projecting calmness.

Sergeant Johnson turns back and nods to Builder. "I appreciate the news stranger and the help too, although it boggles my mind that you are here".

He turns and salutes Hudson crispy. "Sir. I must admit I'm a bit honored. The battle of Ghazni in particular still amazes me. You pulled two men to safety while holding off snipers with only a rifle. It's a shame you retired. You could have made General one day. Anyways as you can see we are holding together, but barely. I don't know how many people were down in the Hive but we've killed 100's of creatures and yet more seem to flood out from the lower floors still.

It doesn't help the situation that the Black Rook, the Artificial Intelligence in charge of the Hive is no longer working with us. It apparently malfunctioned and is carrying out it's own agenda, whatever that may be, I still don't understand how a damn robot can think but Takimi is sure it's doing just that. She's really the one in charge here, she was a head scientist in charge of the operation, I'm under her jurisdiction. We can hold position here for at least another couple days before we have to retreat to an upper level but we're beginning to run low on rations and ammo. There is an armory nearby our position but a creature lives there. It's a huge problem. No strike team has been able to defeat it so I've held off, trying to spare the men, but the damn thing also preys on my men while they are on patrol. Doesn't eat them...just sucks all their blood out. All of it.

We've made several attempts to dive into the Hive and retrieve the vaccine Takimi speaks of but we've been unable to get far. It's not the monsters so much as it is the Black Rook. The computer is, if I can say this without sounding crazy myself, has gone mad. He seems to think he's playing some game. Told us we could have the vaccine if we played. Well I wasn't playing any games so it chased us out with the security systems. It's in charge of all the holographic 3D systems, security weapons, door locks, everything. It's amazing what we entrust to robots because we're so god damned lazy. Anyways, that's about the gist of things. I'm not sure how you can help unless you think you can do what we couldn't", he eyes the others over suspiciously, "although you all look unusually strong for civilians".

"Takimi", Viona mutters from behind them, she stays silent for the moment still, looking thoughtful.

Taking a step forward, Lily nods to Hudson for his achievement and looks to the soldiers. "I am Lily O'Keefe, Private Investigator. It is true we're a bit more than the average citizen, but we've been dealing with these monsters for a couple days now... Unfortunately, we have not learned much more than these creatures were the by-product of virus meant to give eternal life and that they do have resonant thoughts, feelings, emotions, if you will. Several types of beings are infected and loose on the streets, spreading the infection city-wide so that the military has blocked our escape, thinking we are all walking dead. So, I guess that means we're here to do whatever it takes to get that vaccine, though we are now challenged with overcoming an AI gone biserk and that changes things..."  She stops for a moment and continues, "What else can you tell us about the creature in the armory?"
She looks at the pensive Viona and asks, "Is there anything you know or can do to help with the AI problem? After all, you are the insider on this mission."

Johnson's eyes get wider at her words and he shakes his head in disbelief. "Well you must all be more than the average bear to have survived for several days. Takimi knows they are evolving and getting more cunning. I knew it too once I noticed their tactics when attacking us seemed just that, tactical but we didn't know it was that bad on the outside already. Should have known our government would be useless in defending citizens...now they just plan to nuke this beautiful state so they can get on with their political charades and international trading? Fuck that". He spits on the ground, which is already covered with grime, blood, and dust from explosions.

"If you kids really plan on going in...well I'm going in with you. Maybe together we can come back out with the prototype and stop this disaster...have to talk to Takimi first though. As for the creature in the armory? As brave and as strong as you are I doubt you could help. The creature wiped out an entire squadron of my best. Not a single survivor. In fact whatever lives in there ensures that anyone who sees it dies. Out of all the attacks only one man has been spared, somehow".

"Private Thompson", one of the soldiers behind Johnson mutters, lowering his head and staring at the ground. The other soldier sheepishly shuffled his feet. Johnson looks annoyed but doesn't say anything, only continuing.

"The only survivor jumps at every shadow. He is a mess mentally. Repeats to himself, "the eyes, the eyes, they hypnotize" like some kind of mother goose rhyme and the only other thing he will say is in a whisper...Chu-pa-cob-rah, whatever the hell that means".

At Lily's words directed to Viona the Sergeant looks over at her and squints his eyes before they widen in recognition. "Viona Ivankov...Takimi is going to want words with you...and maybe more". His face becomes hard.

Viona smirks in reply. "Then lets cease this stalling. Take us to her. Then we shall talk of malfunctioning AI's", she says, ignoring Lily's question for now.

Johnson only nods and turns around, the soldiers falling in behind him as he leads them down several corridors. In the corridors are make shift bunkers and barricades that men are crouched behind. All of their black helmets follow the newcomers as they walk. Blood is on the bullet ridden walls and some soldiers are dragging Infected bodies off down the hall. Johnson gestures with his head as they walk. "We picked one hallway, one that happened to be a dead end and we throw all the bodies in there before setting them aflame. First time we felt like idiots as the fire system went off and we all got wet but we've disabled it and now it works well as an incinerator".

He continues on, leading the party down winding corridors that they were sure they would get lost in without a guide. Every hallway looks the same, the same off white walls. Builder notices the walls aren't steel or stone or wood for that matter either. Several hallways end at rooms but Johnson passes them up until arriving at a single huge hallway. Here appears the bulk of his men. There are at least twenty in front of military grade pop up barricades. "We use most of the equipment we salvaged here. Inside this room is HQ. From here we guard the Hive's entrance and our backsides. He looks downtrodden momentarily, "Should have known if the creatures were getting behind us they were getting outside too. Wishful thinking I suppose".

"Sergeant Johnson"! A soldier runs up, looking at the newcomers curiously.

"Soldier"? Johnson barks. More of a statement than a question.

"Yes sir", the soldier straightens up and looks directly at Johnson. "Sir...it's Mendez...he got bit".

Johnson's face falls. He closes his eyes for several seconds then opens them and nods. "Understood private. Get back to your post, I'll...handle it as I always have". Johnson turns to the others, his expression is like a rock's but his eyes hold great pain. "I have to...take care of my men. Go on inside the lab. Takimi is inside. She can tell you more than I. I'll return soon". With that he turns and strides off purposefully down the hall to disappear around a corner, following the private.

The door ahead is a huge double steel door like you'd see in a sci fi, like Star Trek. Two guards stand in front of it, holding rifles at their chest as if they expect an attack any moment. There is glass surrounding this section of the room and inside the party can see a laboratory with many people in white working on various machines, computers, or looking into microscopes. Soldiers inside just walk back and forth as if on patrol. There is obviously more but the party cannot see it from their angle.

Lily looks again at Viona as she withdraws her Colt -- just in case. "Is there anything else we need to know before we walk through these doors? Who exactly is this Takimi?"

Builder snorts, "Another Doctor she hoped was dead." He says aloud to himself, "She's trying to remake the cure? Do you think she'll succeed in time?"

Viona sniffs at Lily's questions. "You should know that whatever Takimi says is subjective. I had my reasons for fleeing with the modified virus strain. You for one should do well to remember that without it you would be dead now at the hands of a mad man and probably being fed to his daughter".

At Builder's comment she scowls. "I did not wish anyone dead! And anyone who is dead is dead for greater reasons than you can comprehend"! She flicks her hair aside then takes a deep breathe as she tucks a black lock behind her ear, framing her beauty face. Her eyes, that cold blue, shine. "Dr. Takimi is one of the original four directors on the project, including myself and Dr. Hart and Dr. Johnson. Although she is also brilliant beyond human standards like myself, there is little hope she will be able to recreate a cure from the ground up in time without resources. Remember we are living on borrowed time, only another 12 hours before I believe your government will take action".

With that Viona steps forward and flashes an Ident Card at the guards. Both of them look at the card then look at each other through the helmets then nod. "Head on through", one remarks with a wave of his gun, "The Ident is not needed, we have orders from Johnson to allow you all through". He turns slightly and presses a button on the wall and the huge steel double doors slide open from the middle.

As the party shuffles through they all gaze in wonder at the size of the room. It must be about the size of a football field. The roof being over 20 feet above only gave the impression it was larger. Rows of complicated machinery, hardware, monitors, and other equipment are scattered in a half ordered mess throughout the entire room. Between all these machines and monitors men and women of every race dressed in white lab coats hurried to and fro between them. Some looked in microscopes, others at computer screens, and terrifyingly enough some were studying a giant test tube filled with a strange liquid. Inside an Infected man lay dormant, floating. There were many more sleek black guards here at the door. Even more to the north, where a large door was. And to the far west, where the "field" stretched, guards could be seen patrolling a couple door ways there as well.

The people, guards and scientists alike, seemed shocked at the entrance of the party. Several even stopped to gape but shook their heads and ran off to their duties. They knew they were racing time. And losing.

Suddenly from the shifting sea of white coats a woman is seen approaching them. At each side is a black helmet guard. The woman carries herself powerfully, despite the circumstances her head is held high. She is obviously of Asian descent, perhaps full blooded Chinese. She has long black hair tied into a tight bun on her head. Her eyes are dark black, slanted, her skin an almost yellow tinge. Definitely Asian. She reaches them. Her face is tight and angry.

"What brings you back Viona? Haven't you done enough"? She spits, her Chinese accent strong. "And who are these people? Your puppets? What has she told you I can onry begin to wonder". She gazes at Lily, Chuck, Hudson, and Builder; her squinted eyes making it seem all the more she is scrutinizing them. She turns that glare unto Viona again and suddenly her hand slips to side, where a pistol is strapped to her coat. "Give me one good god damned reason I shouldn't gun down where you stand". She glances at the party again, noticing they are warriors and sizing them up. "Why are you here? How much money has she offered you? It's not going to do you any good if we can't stop the bomb that approaches".

Viona interrupts. "They are here of their own free will. I have not coerced them in any way".

Takimi barks a laugh, mirthless. "I doubt it. Anything you can sink your dark tendrils into you will. I don't suppose she told you why we are in this mess in the first place", she nearly spits again. "Dr. Duncan, who answered directry to you! The Brack Rook, who malfunctioned only afterwards mysteriously and then lo and behold, Dr. Ivankov is missing...and with the experimental modified strains at that! How convenient", she growls.

She turns to the party. "Prease. Do not stand with her. I do not want to hurt you". The guards at her sides heft their weapons and suddenly the party realizes that the guards around them are not patrolling...they are standing at attention all around them, at least six of them, exotic looking rifles in hand.

"God dammit all, there's been enough killin' today." Builder says to Dr. Takimi. "You're damn right she coerced us. She told us if we didn't come here to get the cure we'd all die by the government's hand. A fact that you just confirmed." Then he says, coldly enough to freeze water, "So put the guns down. I ain't goin' down easy, and I'd hate for any of you to get hurt..."

When he sees the guards aiming guns, Chuck realizes that he had already planted his feet in a wide stance, as if expecting trouble.  He doesn't remember doing so.  Was it instinct?  He sets his axe vertically with the head on the floor, and rests his hands on top of it.  Taking a deep breath to appear calm, he says, "Look, we all want the same thing.  To survive.  We're here in case the cure is real, and can use it to keep the bombs away.  And you're sorely mistaken if you think we're coming to her defense.  I don't trust her any further than I can throw her.  Which is a considerable distance now.  But we needed someone with knowledge of this place and access to the cure.  So here we are."

Lily looks at Viona, then back at Takimi, and sighs lightly. She ensures her gun is low at her side, finger out of the trigger area, and the other hand yielding in the air. "They're right. There is no money, no bribe. Only a slim chance to live and let others do the same. I don't know how you feel about this city, but it was not meant to be striped with blood and crawling with the undead. And it sure as hell does not deserve to be blown to bits because of this.. 'problem.' We're here for your help." A slight pause for eye contact with the doctor so she can get a good look at Lily's honesty. "Will you give it?" she asks with unsure eyes.

"we all just need to settle down here, we didnt come here to hurt anyone. We only came here to try and find the cure for this. so we can try to get it to the military before they call the nuke. And besides im with the rest of my group, i can't even try to trust Viona let alone be controlled by her." Hudson stands with his hands out to show he means no harm.

Builder's cold, dead serious words seem to get the guards on edge, some of them nervously check their trigger finger. Doesn't help with ole' Chuck's stance, he looks like he's just ready fer a fight but its Chuck's down to earth honesty makes them stop and listen. Then Lily chimes in with the voice of reason. She usually had a way with words. Even Hudson has a piece. It's obvious the kids don't trust Viona Ivankov.

"No"! Viona screams, "you're playing right into her hands! Don't you understand this prototype vaccine and the modified virus I carry is worth billions to certain parties around the world? Warlords, governments, terrorists...I know for a fact Takimi's father is leader of the Triad's. That is why I ran with the modified virus-".

"Riar"! Screamed Takimi. "Take her! She must pay for her crimes against humanity....with her life"!

The guards move to take Viona. She looks on at all the party members. "Please help me, we must retrieve the virus together, if you go with her she will betray you-please", she pleads, grasping Builder's arm pathetically. "Even if I'm lying, you can't let her kill me". She looks to Lily. "I know I was a bitch but I always did what I thought was necessary".

"Don't risten to her", Takimi says calmly, "she's been manipulating you up into this point to get the vaccine along with the modified virus. You need both to have any real power after all. She set off the Black Rook, she took the modified virus, she even admits her own subordinate Dr. Duncan inoculated Patient Zero! She created this atrocity that destroyed countless people's lives. She is the one who should pay for it".

Well looks like things are picking up pretty quick. The kids have made it this far but the journey through the hive won't be an easy one. Now their guide is getting taken but this Takimi character seems like she might help instead. But in exchange she wants Viona and she don't want her for chatter over a pint. I wondered at the time if the kids were going to let them take her. She was a cold bitch and they sure didn't trust her but she did help them that far and she did help Chuck through the fever and heal up Builder that one time. But was it only for her own advantage? To help her through the enemies of the Hive? I wondered...

Builder positions himself between Viona and the nearest guard. <Damn, I never thought I'd be doing this.> he thinks to himself incredulously. Aloud he says "I'll ask again, since apparently I mumbled. What. Does. More. Killing. Accomplish? You're working on a cure, right? Then keep working. We need to go deeper into this place, and for that we... we need this lying, backstabbing, bitch. Unless you'd like to come...? Nah, if you thought it were possible you'd already be down there."

Hudon sees the guard approach as well and he begins to take action by quickly grabing up his rifle, and aiming it at the guard with his finger off the trigger. "i dont think it would be in your best intrerest to harm Viona. She is, after all, the person that brought us here and is to be navigating us through to the hive."

"Killing Viona now will accomplish no more than her misdeeds did then. You say you do not want to hurt us, but eliminating our guide and helper, even if she has done everything to her own advantage, will do just that. And it would not make us trust you any more than we do her.. Please, let's not add to the piles of bodies. Let your personal battle wait until the city is saved."

The two guards nearly bump into Builder as he moves in front of their path. Both crane their heads up to look Builder in the eye through their black sleek helmets as he speaks, cutting off his words with a dangerous edge. Both of the guards look at each other nervously.

Hudson's action of raising his gun causes all the guards to raise their weapons, training them on him and the others. Things were escalating too quickly.

Lily's pleading didn't seem to have much an effect either. Takimi's black eyes are like endless voids. No mercy shines from them. She speaks harshly.

"It it were possible of course we'd have the god damned vaccine"! She is flustered now, "But for all I know you are in reague with her and praying me for a fool. You could retrieve the prototype vaccine and be gone with both it and the modified virus, while I am here waiting for you like a fool! No...no I can not take that risk". She reaches for her side arm.

"Takimi"! A voice cries out. Sgt. Johnson appears from behind the group, walking through their midst to stand in front of them. "No more...I can't do anymore people today". The man looks nearly next to falling apart. Immediately Takimi's eyes soften immensely. Sgt. Johnson steps forward and takes her hand. "Not Viona...but these people...they are good people. I can see it in their eyes, hear it in their words, and sense it in their hearts. They are here for one thing and one thing only. To save their city and it's people from destruction".

"Andy...", Takimi murmurs, barely audible. Suddenly the more intuitive members of the party may realize something. The two are in love! "I'm sorry, the stress...".

Their hands slip away from each others but Johnson turns to look at the party, although he speaks aloud to everyone it seems. I don't know a lot. Fighting was the only thing I was ever good at. But I know this", he turns to look at Takimi, "This is our only chance. Our only hope. We need their help. If we don't do this now you know what could happen, what will happen. I'll go in with them to help fight, to watch Viona, and to make sure the vaccine finds it's way into the right hands. In the event we fall...you have to keep working on the cure. If it comes to that...everything will be riding on you".

"And-, Sgt. Johnson", Takimi clears her throat, "I cannot arr-ow you to do that".

"And what choice do we have Lihua"? Johnson erupts, "None...so it's going to happen whether you like it or not". Noticing his soldiers were looking around confusedly, their rifles half raised, he barks at them too, "Stand down soldiers"! They adopt different stances and Johnson looks to Takimi. Like that it was decided.

"You're right...as usual", Takimi begrudgingly admits. "But there must be collateral. In exchange for you I must have the modified virus that Viona has. That way even if betrayal occurs she will only have at least half the prize".

Viona's eyes widen and she hugs her white coat tightly to her where she keeps the syringes. "And if you develop a cure while we are gone then you will have both! Or what if you simply have us killed after we retrieve the vaccine? I should be the one to hold on to it-".

"Be glad I am sparing you cunt". Takimi says in a flat voice. "You WILL hand that vaccine over". She looks to the party members, "There will be no negotiation on this. You can take it from her or we will. In exchange I am giving you something very precious to me. Sgt. Johnson will escort you through the Hive, keeping an extra eye on Viona and helping you in battle".

"If only we could get to the armory...", Johnson mutters to himself.

Builder shrugs. "Maybe we can. As a show of... good faith? We take care of the thing in there, and you leave Viona to her petty secrets." He grins morbidly, and gives Johnson an odd look. "Besides, if we can't handle that one little issue, we won't last long deeper in, will we?"

The creatures earlier, the soldiers, the thing in the armory... Why did Builder seem so eager to fight, all of a sudden? It would be one thing if he were only throwing his life away, but it seemed he was intent to drag the rest of you along with him.

Lily raises her eyebrows. "Heh, a little eager to find out what 'Chu-pa-cob-rah' means?" she says quietly to Builder as her head looks down at inadequate equipment. "We do need more armaments..." Lily finds herself imagining the scene with an unknown danger, nearly matching that morbid grin of Builder's. She composes herself. -Focus and act.
"Let's get moving. We don't have time for more arguments, Takimi. Your dispute comes after the city. What are our options of entry to the armory?"

Since no one protests but Viona the soldiers approach her again and hold their hands out. "We can do this the easy way or the hard way madam", one of the soldiers asks politely. Viona sneers in his face but seeing as no one is resisting but her she has no choice. "You've won this little game Takimi but this isn't over yet", she says angrily as she hands over the modified virus strain. The soldiers take it and return to Takimi who hands it off to another white coated lab technician.

At Builder's words and the odd look on his face Johnson is taken aback. Johnson had seen that look on a man's face before, on soldiers who learned to love combat too much. It was a blood thirst that usually ended their lives.

"I...I don't know about that son. We've killed all manner of things escaping the Hive. Monsters that fire spiked projectiles, creatures that cling to the ceiling and have long spiked tongues they can grab a man with, and more. But this thing...whatever it is. It outranks the other monsters in power by leagues. As I said only one man has saw it and survived and he is hardly inside his own head anymore the shock was so great. I'll go with you in the Hive but I won't go to the armory. I can't ask you to go either. If you do, we would all appreciate it as the creature keeps picking my men off here and there. If you can kill it you can take anything you want from the armory but I can't, I won't ask you".

Takimi chimes in. "The monster as And- er, Sgt Johnson was saying is indeed obviously more powerful than any other creature we've encountered. If you want my honest opinion I think it has mutated to another life form completely. I also hypothesize it uses a type of hypnosis to enrapture it's victims, then it sucks their blood for nourishment. This is why we find bodies that have died without a struggle. I'm almost positive the monster is...Patient Zero".

Sgt. Johnson sees the determination on Lily's face when she speaks and shakes his head in disbelief. "You people are something else. If you wish to enter the armory and face the creature I can take you to the entrance but it will take time and that is something we are short of, and as I said, it will be more dangerous than anything you have faced so far. Yet it is your decision. Are you all really willing to try this"?

Hudson nods in agreement with Johnson "your right we are short on time. Lets take care of what needs to be done first, then we should think whether or not we should fight this paitient zero."

"True. Better to use the short while we have to accomplish our main goal... Well, if we all agree that's the best course of action, let's get going." Lily looks around, assuming her comrades were considering the ticking of the clocks--and likely bombs. "So what is our approach?"
