Homebrew Contest II: Discussion Thread
« on: August 24, 2012, 03:29:49 AM »
This is the discussion thread for our current homebrew contest. Questions, comments on entries, conversations among entrants, angry tirades about my lineage, and the like all go here, while actual entries should be directed to the contest thread here.

Current Contest Topic: Races of the Board

Previous Contests:
I: One-Spell Wonders. Winner(s): A tie between TheGeometer's Master of Opening and Closing and veekie's Thousand Petal Initiate!

Would a prestige class based on expanding the hideous blow invocation into something good be close enough?

First of all, DEATH TO YOUR ANCESTORS OF AT LEAST FIVE GENERATIONS AGO!  Oh wait...

Second, you might want to put in a blurb about how the voting process will work.

Third, I am now cogitating.

Can do. My phone doesn't handle the text editing here well, though, so sometime tonight.

Hey, if you can give that shoddy excuse for an invocation a reason to exist, more power to you.

Is a small, closely related group of spells acceptable, such as the Karmic Aura/Backlash/Retribution trio?

I'd say those are close and small enough to be acceptable.

When including a picture, may I suggest having it be no wider/higher than 600 or 700px?

You can use:

or
[img height=600]

To force an image size.

I'm thinking of disintegrate. I might need to give gust of wind as a spell like.

You know, you don't have to claim spells.  Hey Boz, you aren't going to restrict it so that two people can't do the same idea, right?  If they do, I mean, then it's only going to be a contest between who executed it better, right?

I assume its on raw merits alone. There are many possible iterations of spells or groups of spells.

Another question is number of entries. One per poster, or as many as you have the interest to grind it up?

can i do a prc based on enhancing any single one spell?  as in you pick a single spell and get massive benefits with it

I'm... wondering where the confusion is.  Isn't that exactly what the contest is?

Rather than choosing a spell and building a class around it he wants to build a class around choosing any one spell chosen when you take the class I think.

I should edit the PrC template and some suggestions into the second post, probably. Might even put up links to homebrewing guidelines, just to tempt some new blood into entering.

Right. It's entirely possible that two people's ideas of a glitterdust prestige class are going to diverge wildly, so restricting the one who posted the idea second would be silly.

Hmm. Yeah, I can see that working, and it certainly fits with the prompt I gave. Go for it!

How do we want to handle the etiquette of critiquing each others' entries?

Personally, since this is a friendly contest, I would rather be facing off against everyone's strongest work (and vice versa), so my inclination is that we should critique.  But if everyone else wants to keep things quiet until after, I can work with that.

Am I the only one bothered by the fact that the template doesn't use the same number of dashes for all three horizontal lines in the NPC stat block?
