Class skills (4+Int): Proficiencies: A devourer isn't proficient with any armor or weapons, besides its own natural weapons.
Features:Body of Hunger: The Devourer loses all other racial traits and bonuses and gains undead traits. It is a Medium creature with a base speed of 30 feet, darkvision 60ft, scent, a natural armor bonus equal to its Str modifier, and 2 claw attacks as natural weapons dealing 1d6 damage plus its Str modifier. A devourer is treated as an outsider for effects which target outsiders (if an effect would have specific effects on both undead and outsiders, use whichever is worse).
Trap Essence (Su): As a standard action a devourer can consume a helpless sentient living creature within reach, trapping its soul and causing the tiny figure within its ribs to take on its features. The trapped essence can speak as if via a
magic mouth effect, but must make a Will save each round (DC = 10 + half your HD + your Cha modifier) to communicate anything other than screams of agony. You take a -10 penalty on Move Silently checks unless the essence's
magic mouth ability is somehow suppressed.
The trapped essence cannot be raised or resurrected, but can be freed by a
wish,
limited wish, or
miracle spell, or by destroying the devourer (causing the tiny figure's features to become blank). A devourer can hold only one essence at a time; if it consumes a second creature then the first essence is freed. Summoned or temporarily created creatures cannot be consumed, and are simply destroyed instead, as are creatures with fewer than 1 HD. This is a death effect.
If any of the following spells would affect the devourer, they affect the imprisoned essence instead:
banishment,
chaos hammer,
confusion,
crushing despair,
detect thoughts,
dispel evil,
dominate person,
fear,
geas/quest,
holy word,
hypnotism,
imprisonment,
magic jar,
maze,
suggestion,
trap the soul, or any form of charm or compulsion. In many cases, this deflection effectively neutralizes the spell. Some of these effects might eliminate the trapped essence, depriving the devourer of a source of power until it can consume another victim.
Soul Charges: The devourer powers its racial abilities by expending "soul charges"; it cannot spend more soul charges in a round than half its HD. The devourer has a natural pool of soul charges equal to half its HD (round down) which recharge daily, and can also choose to drain soul charges from its trapped essence. For every five soul charges so drained, the essence gains one negative level which cannot be lost while it remains in the devourer. When the essence’s number of negative levels equals the creature's total HD, the essence is destroyed. If an essence is freed, the restored creature must succeed on a Fortitude save (DC = 10 + half your HD + your Cha modifier) for each negative level or lose that level permanently.
Unholy Toughness: A devourer gains bonus hit points equal to its HD x its Charisma modifier. These hit points are otherwise identical to the bonus hit points a living creature gains from a high Constitution score.
Ability Score Increase: The devourer's ability scores increase by the shown amount.
Flensing (Ex): At 2nd level the devourer's claws tear at their victims' flesh in a particularly painful way, inflicting +1 nonlethal damage per 2 HD. In addition, creatures who take damage must make a Fortitude save (DC = 10 + half your HD + your Cha modifier) or take a -2 penalty to attack rolls and AC for 1 minute or until they receive magical healing, whichever comes first. Multiple flensings reset the duration (this effect does not stack with itself). Creatures immune to critical hits are immune to this ability.
Spell-like Abilities (Sp): As it gains levels, a devourer can expend soul charges to cast certain spells as spell-like abilities (caster level equals your HD, save DC = 10 + spell level + your Cha modifier). The devourer may choose to expend additional charges beyond the required cost; for each additional charge the spell's effective level increases by 1, as if it had applied the Heighten Spell metamagic feat. If it possesses any metamagic feats then it may apply them to its racial SLAs at the rate of 1 soul charge per slot increase.
Lv2 (1 charge) -
chill touch,
inflict light wounds,
ray of enfeeblementLv4 (2 charges) -
ghoul touch,
inflict moderate wounds,
spectral handLv6 (3 charges) -
dispel magic,
inflict serious wounds,
suggestionLv8 (4 charges) -
confusion,
inflict critical wounds,
lesser planar allyLv10 (5 charges) -
greater dispel magic,
harm (self only)
Rebuke Undead (Su): At 3rd level, a devourer can expend 1 soul charge to rebuke undead as an evil cleric of a level equal to its HD; it may expend soul charges in place of rebuke undead attempts for any ability powered by the latter.
Powerful Build (Ex): At 3rd level, a devourer is treated as one size larger than normal for size modifiers whenever this would be a benefit (i.e. grapple checks but not AC), and can wield weapons as if it were one size category larger. At 5th level this ability is superceded by Growth, but the devourer regains this ability at 7th level.
Growth: At 5th level, the devourer loses Powerful Build and increases in size by one category (to Large). Do not adjust its ability scores for increasing in size, though its claws improve to deal 1d8 + Str damage.
Spell Resistance (Su): At 5th level a devourer gains Spell Resistance equal to 11 + its HD. It may raise or lower this Spell Resistance as a free action, even if it isn't its turn.
Lifesense (Su): At 6th level, a devourer's eyes can see as if living creatures emitted light. A Medium or smaller creature gives off life force sufficient to provide bright illumination in a 60-foot radius, revealing itself and all features and objects in range to the devourer's life-adapted sight; each size beyond Medium doubles the radius of illumination, to a maximum of 960ft for a Colossal creature. This life-light behaves like regular light - the devourer can't see into solid objects, or past solid walls.
This light has a red tint for a creature immune to the devourer's Devour special attack (whether this is due to high hit points or an immunity to death effects), blue for a summoned/constructed/fractional HD creature, and white otherwise.
Greater Rebuking (Su): At 7th level, 1/day when a devourer successfully rebukes an undead it may choose to command it instead.
Energy Drain (Su): At ?th level, whenever a devourer hits a living target with a natural weapon or melee touch attack, the target gains one negative level (a touch spell channeled through a natural weapon triggers this effect once only). The save DC to remove this negative level is 10 + half your HD + your Cha modifier.
Devour (Su): At 9th level, the devourer may use its Trap Essence special attack on any creature with remaining hp equal to 5x the devourer's HD or less, even if it is not helpless. If the target succeeds on a Fortitude save (DC = 10 + half your HD + your Cha modifier) then it instead takes 1d8 damage per 2 HD you possess, and is devoured if this would result in its death.
Aura of Entropy (Su): If the devourer ends its turn within 30ft of a spell effect with a duration other than Instantaneous or Permanent, the CL of that spell is reduced by 1 - if this reduces the spell's CL or remaining duration to 0, then the the effect ends. The devourer's own spells are not affected by this ability, and it may be suppressed at will.
Steal Spell (Sp): At ?th level a devourer can cast spells available to its trapped essence. This expends both the essence's spell slot and a number of soul charges equal to 1 + the level of the spell. It must still provide any XP or expensive material components as normal. The devourer can copy spell-like abilities in the same fashion, and its use counts against the essence's number of uses of those abilities.
Note that as the essence gains negative levels, it may lose the ability to cast spells of higher levels.
Frightful Screams (Su): (Essence produces fear babbles on a failed Will save, particularly effective against its friends)
? (Su): At 11th level a devourer gains 1 temporary soul charge at the start of each round, which lasts for 1 round. The number of soul charges a devourer may expend per round increases by 1.
CommentsThe fluff talks about its terrible claws, so I made them a little more terrible. The list of SLAs was expanded, including some self-healing to make it more of a juggernaut, while control undead was converted to Rebuke Undead. A few more abilities were added to fit the theme of H҉u̢n͟҉̧g̛e̡̨̕r̴, including scent. I also gave them a limited ability to use their SLAs on their own if they're starved for victims.
