Gosh! It seems like so long ago I don't where to start. It was so innocent at first... cops and robber... cowboys and indians. And then the games got more complex... we were spacemen and our ship got damaged in a meteor storm and we crash landed somewhere. There'd be aliens and then weird ruins and stuff. Sometimes in the games we'd argue about who shot who and we'd wonder if we needed rules... or... god help us... an impartial referee! Some sort of "games master." But then we'd just laugh it off and go climb the jungle gym until we felt normal again.
It was years later at a comic book store that I first saw the dice...
So many shapes and sides. Sparkly dice, glow-in-the-dark ones... even ones that looked like JEWELS. I don't really remember what happened after that...when I woke up I was back home in my room... the... the dice were in my HAND!!! And there, on the desk before me.... a brand new character! An elf. No class- just "elf". And the innocent games were gone. Now we'd kill things... and take their stuff!!!!
But that was long ago. Since then there have been so many games I sometimes loose track. D&D, Paranoia, Villains and Vigilantes, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Battletech, Amber, GURPS, Vampire, Star Wars, Hero, Pathfinder, Fantasycraft.... and endless succession of characters, death, and dice. It always comes back to the dice....
