Huge Creature making an Overrun against multiple PC's
« on: October 30, 2012, 11:23:56 PM »
A Kastigur (sp?) demon from the MM4 is a huge demon that has Improved Overrun.  There is a combat setup whereby he will want to get past my PC's, who will try to stop him.

The Kastigur is Huge, filling a 15x15-foot space (technically a 15-foot cube?).  As usual, the rules for overrun attacks are written from the perspective of a Medium character...

My PC's are in a line, and my demon wants to overrun them to knock them prone and get past them.  Is this possible?  If so, how?

Do I just initiate an overrun against all of them, the demon gets one check, and each person targeted gets to make a check to stop him?

It will actually get even more complicated than that.  Many of my PC's will be air-born, so he'll be trying to push through a "wall" of them.  Even though the rules don't call for it, should there be some kind of penalty to the PC's check if he is air-born (and thus has no ground to brace against...)?

learning from my mess in that other thread:

[opinion]
i think that "realistically" flying pc's could attempt to 'fly' against the monster and thus provide potentially checking force. which may not be supported by actual rules as written; does it require a move action, etc.....

rules wise, my opinion is that each character could attempt an individual check against the monster, but that should likely be balanced by multiple checks on the part of the monster too. which would really slow the game down.

the other option that strikes me is to make a single monster check, and have the party pick a single "main" character to resist the overrun, and have the rest of the group make aid another checks to boost the primary character. this would remain within the framework of the existing rules, while providing a pseudo-realistic descriptive resolution for what the whole group is trying to accomplish.

if there is some spell or power (such as immovability) which can be used to boost another, that might be a better option for a specific supporting character, assuming they have time to bring that to bear....
[/opinion]

i hope this is actually helpful and makes sense this time around.

That's actually a pretty good idea.

^^ even a broken clock is right twice a day... or once if it's on military time. i guess that puts my batting average on the boards to about .001.  :D

seriously, though, glad i came up with something usable.
