Princess will be a base class in D&D 6.0? And there will be no more fighting. Just Magic Tea Party all day.  :shakefist

Really?  They just bought Lucasarts and gave a press release about how they're planning on making several new Star Wars movies.  I feel like if they keep buying companies at this rate, they ought to run in to some antitrust issues.

Magic: the Gathering will be re-branded into Mickey: the Gathering
D&D characters will never actually "die."  They'll just be temporarily incapacitated.  Even the bad guys.  Because killing is wrong.
Most monsters will get a more "kid friendly" makeover - say goodbye to brain-eating Illithids!

Seriously though, if Next doesn't sell well they'll probably just scrap the entire D&D product line.
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

Wow, disney hate.
I hate their corporate ethics, don't get me wrong, but "things never die"?

Kingdom Hearts: bad shit happens to people; Axel commits suicide even (of course, Nobodies don't exist, so that doesn't count  :rolleyes)
Pirates of the Caribbean: doesn't show blood, but people die, have to run from cannibals, et alli.
National Treasure 2: guy dies.

Disney are not all "family friendly" in every way shape and form. They are the worlds premiere money-grubbing bastards. Anti-trust issues? They'll just buy off enough law-makers to change the law, reformat their company to be only technically adherent, or some other "nice try, whatever" means of negating any charges.
Just look at what they've done with copyright laws.

Sorry, I could have been a bit clearer that I was joking.  I thought about mentioning Pirates of the Carribean (didn't think of Kingdom Hearts) and pointing out that Disney doesn't always kid-ify things, but that isn't as fun  :tongue

Still, I don't expect Disney to greenlight a Book of Vile Darkness.

Disney has one of the world's best marketing and PR divisions.  They know D&D's target audience well enough to leave certain things alone, but I'm sure they won't hesitate to try to expand that audience by making things more "accessible," and that usually entails cutting some of the more squicky content.

Actually, that's a good point.

But moreso, I could see them doing one thing to bring in people, making it accessible, then one for people like us.
In other words, D&D and AD&D. With a semi-separate version of real simple, tabletop rules (a la Chainmail & D&D Minis).

Ah well, it is all hypothetical based on hypothetical at this point.

I'm not sure if Disney buying out Hasbro would change anything, as far as D&D is concerned. Like the article says, the primary motivation for this would be to own toy licenses for movies, which makes sense considering tie-in toys make a lot more money than Dungeons & Dragons does (depressing, I know). Hasbro has a pretty hands-off approach to its subsidiaries and I expect that Disney will as well, especially for Wizards of the Coast. Magic: the Gathering's formula is pretty solid already, and D&D is barely worth their time.

On the other hand, if Disney does get involved in D&D, I think it would actually be a good thing. While undoubtedly evil, the WDC is also very competent. What's good for the business is good for the hobby. Disney could market the game properly (something Wizards has never been really good at), do research properly (another thing WotC has often failed at), and be better able to respond to sudden challenges (like the DDi fiasco back during 4e's launch).

It is pretty funny to think of a kid-friendly, Mickey Mouseified D&D, but Disney is as soulless and amoral corporation as they come. If they change the look of anything, it is because their calculations tell them it would sell better that way. Which, perhaps, is exactly the kind of thinking the Dungeons & Dragons brand needs.

Do remember that Disney still owns Marvel, and they've left it mostly alone (the films have been censored gore-wise to accommodate children, but even the Avengers had stuff that wouldn't be child-friendly).

Disney bought Marvel and put out some really good superhero movies.  Maybe we'll get a few more D&D movies.

Or maybe we'll get Cinderella, Thor, and Luke Skywalker sitting around playing Magic the Gathering.

Now I'm just plain stuck on the idea of a D&D movie written and / or directed by the guy who directed Avengers. :love

Oh, what was his name again?...  :smirk

"Oh, you bought a new car? What kind?"

"2014 Disney Rapunzel."

"Cool. Want to get some burgers?"

"Sure. How about McDisney's?"

I was just talking to a coworker the other day about how I was surprised at all the weird stuff Mitsubishi distributed. I remembered seeing a can of water chestnuts in my parent's cupboard with their logo on it.

+1

Since they're planning a Star Wars every 3 years or so,
they'll need some extra ideas and inspiration, from somewhere.
D&D will work.

:D ... maybe they will be the ones to finally nerf the Druid.

Of course! That has to be the prime motivator for getting both companies.

... Transformers, and MLP are owned by Hasbro.
Magic the Gathering is owned by Hasbro.

Anyone else think that it would be awesome if there were worlds for those things in Kingdom Hearts. Which, honestly, already has a bit of a feel of being a Planeswalker of Dominia at times / in ways.

Disney also has Touchstone Pictures, which has released several R rated movies.  I don't think they'd muck too much with the D&D stuff if they think it's better for teenage or adult players, but I can imagine the quality would improve if they put more money into it.
