True Strike & Other Combat Divs
« on: November 09, 2012, 12:07:18 PM »
I'm considering being a 2nd level diviner in an upcoming game, but the combat pickings don't seem very impressive. True Strike is great once I can quicken it, but until then it seems like a waste. 2 standard actions + 2 of my best spell slots just to make sure I can inflict a 1d6+1 Str penalty or something?

Looking ahead, there's See Invisibility and a couple situationally useful combat divinations but there seem to be a lot of spell levels that are 'wasted' on combat divs. I'd pick another specialty, but I really can't decide what to give up other than evocation.

Suggestions? Opinions? Commiserations?

If homebrew is allowed, Garryl wrote up some offensive divinations that are quite awesome.

I'm doubtful that homebrew is acceptable, but it's worth a try right?

Divinations = Clairsentience , but there's more
combat options on the psi side.
Discipline Erudite and/or Spell to Power, perhaps?

Targeting Ray (SpC) and Insight of Good Fortune (PHB2) are the only ones I would consider pure combat spells of level 1-2 (TS aside).
Also, at that level Detect Magic might be useful to see what empowers your enemies. Then you make sure to "steal"/"disarm" those items.

Definitely.  And Garryl's stuff is generally excellent.  Here's the link.

Honestly, the best thing to do with extra divination spell slots is to burn them for something else.  If you plan to gish at all, Arcane Strike is great.  If your DM rules that picking up Spontaneous Divination (flavorful!) counts as casting spells spontaneously, Versatile Spellcaster is amazing.

Always happy to take in well made homebrew. And Divination is in sore need of spells such as these.

Guided Shot is a decent early substitution for True Strike, when using ranged attacks, since it's already a swift cast.

Assay Spell Resistance is great, too.
What do I win?
An awesome-five for mentioning Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.
