What are some holy monster-things?
« on: December 06, 2012, 05:32:52 PM »
So, if you've seen my two other threads about the rogue and barbarian, you know I'm doing a bit of houseruling. So, in my quest to make the paladin's mount better, I'm looking for creatures it could grow into. For example, at 15th level, I was thinking about it becoming a couatl.

A Couatl might be a bad choice. There is a definite possibility that it would be more powerful than the paladin. However, Unicorns and Pegasi are good staples, as are animals with the Celestial or Half-Celestial  templates

Well, obviously it wouldn't have spellcasting (or as much spellcasting). But I'm also making the Pally a good deal better.

That is rather essential to their fluff, though you could certainly use the stats but you would need some new background to go with it.

Demicoatyl - the offspring of a coatyl that, in intense boredom or loneliness, mates with an ordinary anaconda? Inherits flight and inherent goodness, but too primitive to cast spells?

EDIT: or perhaps coatyls intentionally breed such creatures as paladin mounts.

Kind of like the critters the Yuan-Ti keep around then?

Simply lowering the level of spellcasting gives the Pally good utility but the mount won't overshadow him, I think.

I'm partial for the Nightmare. Cool abilities, and the flavor (and fur color) can be changed at will to match your goody-two-shoes requirements.

I would stick with creating paladin spells that alter the special mount (perhaps some that are instantaneous and cost exp).
If its flight you want, there is a spell out there that grants your mount wings.

I've played with the idea of giving my paladins a 'stable' of mount options as they progress. Primarily because a player of mine took a PrC that gave him access to a giant owl and asked if he could change his mount.

Trying to fluff it has been the hard part for me. Would the mount be mutable because it's just a spirit that's summoned to help him? Or are there multiple 'sweet rides' on lone from a deity?

So you could potentially fluff the Couatl form as less powerful because it's not, actually, a true form but a comfortable representation of ... mumble...mumble.
