Statting out a "Troll King"

In my Norse campaign setting, there is an older, more "noble" race of trolls that are dying out (because the troll wives keep cursing each other to barrenness), and maintain great halls of riches underneath the mountains.

This race is represented as Half-Troll War Trolls.  Being that my campaign is a gestalt setting, I figured it would be a good idea that the "Troll King" also be gestalt.

Here is a basic Half-Troll War Troll, with all the same feats, etc, as the base MM3 War Troll:

Here is my proposed build for the Troll King.

I've not given him any equipment yet aside from a Mithril Chain Shirt and a MW Greatsword.  He obviously needs a way to fly, and an amulet to reroll saves would be good (8,500 gp from MiniHB).

Aside from equipment, what other changes would you suggest for him?

Paragon or Monster of Legend could be cool, I forget which one is the non-stupid CR raise.

Maybe better is some sort of Outsider template for him, like Half-Fiend if he's really evil. With 12HD the Outsider type is pretty sick. Half Fiend also solves the wing problem.

Without knowing much about your game, I'm going to just start assuming things. Kings shouldn't be Scouts. They shouldn't hit and run, they should be a large powerful presence that stands tall and doesn't falter. Crusader levels and a reach weapon would be great IMO. Maneuvers offer much more interesting battle mechanics than straight damage output. And White Raven maneuvers on his Honor Guard would be neat. The ability to ignore damage for a round also has great synergy with DR and Regeneration, making him completely immune to anything but big hits.

AFB so bare with me. Maybe Outsider 12/Warmind +2//Half Fiend 4/Crusader 4/Warmind 3/Crusader +2?
Or drop the Warmind and go full ToB? Warmind is good because like ToB, it offers him things to make the encounter more interesting then damage. And it can easily be fluffed as a King's Force of Will(haki). Sweeping Strike helps with action economy which really makes him imposing on the battlefield. And more DR is troll fitting.

Monster of Legend is actually for the single progenitor troll (just tack MoL on the above example).  These guys are his diluted offspring.

I'd never thought about Paragon, though.  +15 CR increase though... (That's the one from the ELH, but is there some other version of Paragon as well?)

There are half-fiend trolls in the world, and my PC's have dealt with them a lot.  This guy definitely is not fiendish.  This guy is nearly a "pureblood" for lack of a better term.

Although Tome of Battle is an excellent suggestion, I don't happen to use it for this specific campaign.  More than anything, the scout levels are for the skill points, a small boost to damage, and the other interesting abilities they get (blindsense, for example).  Rogue doesn't work, because my PC's are almost all straight-classed Barbarian or Rogue on one side, so sneak attack never works against them.

Some random ideas:

He's a primordial giant, so he has inbred magical ability.  How about Duskblade?

An alternative if you're feeling homebrew-y could be Nullblade.

Another homebrew option (which you could refluff slightly, or not) is Horned Juggernaut.

In that case I hold to my War Mind suggestion because psionics are interesting encounters. Or War Hulk 4 for a similar effects(note: this class is awesome in gestalt). And/or jump around for bonus feats and get some neat BFC abilities.

You might want to go with the Riposte alternate class feature for scout since he's a melee beast.

I would suggest an Ur-Priest, honestly. Or some other form of Divine spellcasting, I'm just partial to Ur-Priests. Seems more useful and more fitting for a ruler than Scout.

What about a clawlock, with its abilities fluffed as organic? (standard Eldritch Blast fluffed as growing + shooting spines, or just ripping off his own limbs and throwing them) If you wanted blindsense, here you can go the Mindbender + Mindsight route.

I'm almost sure there is a feat to add Eldrich damage to claw attacks and grapples. Could be something.

Ur-Priest would be good, but maybe for the next time they meet a leader of this race.  This guy I want to "merely" be a melee brute.

I know that isn't super optimized, but sometimes you just want to use an archetype, you know?

Sadly, I think the Riposte ACF wouldn't qualify him for Improved Skirmish, so I'll need to choose a different bonus feat.  Probably blind-fight or quick draw.  Blind-fight wouldn't be super useful, as he has darkvision, low-light vision, and can bring up a 65-foot radius invisibility purge at will, but quick draw is always useful, especially since he has Leap Attack.  Draw and charge in the same round.

His wife will be a War Troll//Warlock/Hellfire Warlock, though.  Maybe I'll change it to a Ur-Priest instead...

Skullbiter the Boneking

Cursed by the wives of his fallen enemies for being too stupid to see things other people's ways, he is forever cursed to be able to only eat the heads of things. Thus he has developed a taste for skulls. His armor is made from skulls. The skulls moan continuously causing all within 30' to make a will save DC22 or become frightened. Those who save are merely shaken. The Skulls also bite at anything that gets too close. Acts as rusting grasp, but applies to any weapon that tries to strike him

Basically, Full Plate +1 with unique special abilities [total +5]


He wields a weapon made from a massive skull of a mastodon with the tusks intact and what appears to be the mast of a clipper ship. The words, "HMS Hephaestus" are still visible to anyone who cares to look at the weapon upside down and stare at the metal ring around it's handle. It's glowing tusks humm with evil intent and a massive bellowing roar is unleashed with every critical.

It is a Huge Great Hammer +1 (Impact, Screaming Burst Thundering) [Total +5] Crits on a 17-20 for x4, +1d4 sonic on every blow, and it does an extra 6d8 sonic on top of the massive damage done by the power attack of a two handed Huge Great Hammer

Base damage a whopping 4d6 + 1 + [1.5x(Strength bonus + Power attack)] Go with a strength of 26 Power attack for 2... Avg damage 30. Crit is x4 for ahhhhh... 120 avg crit base damage, plus 1d4 sonic and 6d8 sonic. (I know I make it clear I hate burst weapons, but sometimes you go with STYLE over stats.)


There. How's THAT for a troll king?

Ooo... One of my players mensioned to  Make him dragonblooded (red). Since Trolls are green, and the dragon is red, he'd be a red and green. A festive color for the holidays.

This is just some preliminary work on a Ur-Priest version for a Troll Queen.

Although I've given her Combat Reflexes and Robilar's Gambit, I might back off from that, and maybe give her Elder Giant Magic.  Her Concentration modifier is so high that she will automatically succeed on the Concentration checks.  She can also use it to increase the CL on her SLA's, most notably Invisibility Purge.  CL 19 puts her at 95 feet of purging, for 19 minutes.

Scribe Scroll would also be a good feat for this troll-wife, so she can have other interesting items at hand... Having Necrotic Skull Bomb would be nice... (note, it is a swift action)

Well, this is a king among the troll scions.

The original troll was a cruel joke by Loki. (That's the Monster of Legend version).
