Battle: Angel Summoner vs BMX Bandit
« on: December 20, 2012, 10:33:03 PM »
Need help with a build and tactics. My friend said that he could best a Core + Complete wizard build with only a fighter. Something about a super bow-blasting-build. I won’t know the details till show time. But he’s been bragging for weeks now saying that his fighter builds can beat any class. Say all he needs is one hit and he'll disjunction all my magic and it will be game over. I really don’t want to screw this up so any suggestions for a build and especially tactics.

Was thinking:

Wizard 13/Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 7

Character Rules
D&D 3.5 Core & Complete Books Only
25 Point Buy
20th Level (Standard Wealth for 20th (760,000 GP), no item can be worth more than 200k)
Leadership and the like are banned
No extra XP
Race: Human
Class: Wizard
Prestige Classes: Any from D&D 3.5 Core & Complete Books Only

Combat Rules
Encounter distance begins at 300 ft.
Arena structure, single plane.  Rest of the plane is an open field.
Plane wraps around at 5 miles.
To win, you must kill your target.  Failure to kill is a loss

Thanks,
Necro

OK, first Iot7V is 7 levels only.

Also, even in the completes only you can do better than Wiz10.  Red Mage comes to mind, for some Circle Magic shenanigans...

EDIT: and this might help.

1. Wind Wall.
2. Make sure his build is legal.
3. Time Stop + PAO ground into aqua regia or lava, sit back and laugh.
4. Maze, make the terrain unfriendly in his absence.

This might help also: http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=3763.0

Especially my build: http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=3763.msg119987#msg119987

 :D

I was limited to core only for classes, so you could do much better. That might be useful for general strategies and "cheats", though.

Thanks! One question though, what's so great about the Loremaster in this kind of situation?

Loremaster is great in core-only because it has class features, and is therefore a flat upgrade on straight wizard.
Iot7V is a good choice, as is MatAO, Master Specialist (for the early levels), and if you can swing the requirements, Dweomerkeeper.

What about pre-combat buffs?

And from the looks of it, he's using the Mage Slayer feat tree to disjunction on hit.

Oh, and stinking cloud has to be one of my favorate battlefield spells. Combined with sleet stor, you can shut a group down and keep them shut down, trapped inside a fart. When does that ever get old?

He's intending on using a Witch Slayer eh?  :eh

This is cute... You know, I would agree to giving him a good old handicap, but he decided to mock the idea that a Wizard ISN'T the closest thing to God.

Abjurer 3 [Needs less levels, might use Precocious Apprentice for qualifications] [Evok/Ench] / Master Specialist 3 / Geometer 3 [I wanna replace this with something more combat orientated] / Io7V 7 / Archmage 4 [If using precocious apprentice add in another level for full Archmage, but you could just use Red Wizard for Circle Magic abuse and you can still ban Illusions if you really want too since you have Simulacrum now]

This build has 1 prerequisite (Spell Focus: Abjuration) that you won't be getting from another class here and allows for PLENTY of room for feat flexibility.

I think I'm not alone on this one, but what could he possibly be thinking? "If I'm lucky, I might get in a blow and have him dead without his precious magic!"

Now he claims that he'll be putting magical traps on is arrow heads loaded with 9th levels spells.

(1) He still has to hit me with his arrows. (says the seeking ability on his bow will obviate any miss chance)

but

(2) Is that even a legal use of traps?

If it is, you can just put a resetting trap on your robes to counterspell his arrows or something.

Not Even. Just use Wind Wall and he is S.O.L. on even using Arrows in the 1st place. Besides, it kind of makes the challenge moot to make it Wizard v Fighter w/Wizard spells  :p He matter as well take it as a surrender that Magic > Might

If you tie your Contingency to Feather Fall (an Immediate action), then you pretty much get to go whenever. You could even make the argument that Feather Fall can be cast when flatfooted, as that seems to be the intention of the spell.

My big concern, with how he seems to be doing this, is his expenses. Since the only way to spell trap an arrow with 9th level spells is to use an actual spell trap, then each arrow needs its own trap. Thus he doesn't get the 1/50 cost per arrow trapped.

That, or he's going to completely ignore WBL, but I assume he's trying to cheat it, not ignore it.

To say nothing of the fact that such spells would have the minimum save DC. Disjunction has a minimum DC (the DC it would have as a trap) of 23. It is a Will save DC 23 to ignore it. Your Will should be quite a bit higher than that.

Speaking of the fact that he ignores miss chance, thanks to Seeking, whether or not that works against Mirror Image would be debatable (since it is not a miss %), but the fact that it specifies that you must still aim at the correct square means that things like the fog line of spells still FUBAR's him. Like how Solid Fog prevents ranged attacks.
>On that note, use illusions creatively. Bam, he loses.
> Heh, or sink down into the ground via Ethereal Jaunt or the like. Then just pester him with summons.

Anywho, Wind Wall, Control Wind, Summon X spells (make him chew through fodder), Wall of X ('I ignore miss chance' means jack when there is no LoE, but with summons and Control Wind, you don't need LoE).

That, and of course, Disjoin him. All his magic gear and spell traps and whatnot, gone. You should have a DC for your spell higher than 23, and his Will shouldn't be as high as yours, to say nothing about how you have ways of lowering his save.

Actually... you could probably just TKO him with Time Stop + 5 x Delayed Cone of Cold. Or just use your Boom Box, because every Wizard should have one ready, just in case.

Hell, just majorly F*** with him. Grease his bow.
> Bonus style points if you manage to hit him with Torrent of Tears before you win. Make the fool cry for his impertinence. Literally.

I would actually line up multiple of these in a paranoid setup, just in case he has multiple ways of getting around these. Like Solid Fog first, then he has to use a counter-ability to get rid of it. And you get to be able to see how he does so. Just remember that if he is at all competent, he's going to have Freedom of Movement, Mind Blank, Death Ward, and multiple other immunities / recovery methods. And if I were him, I'd be planning on using a Belt of Battle to increase my ability to act.
