ability score cap
« on: December 21, 2012, 06:15:15 AM »
I was wondering what should be the top score to aim at for a cleric.
I was thinking:
- wisdom after a 19 score it's not great since we have a sort of diminishing return, every 2 levels CD for spells improves by 1, but we don't need anymore for casting spells since the maximum is 10+9.
- str is pretty dull in terms of advantages, every 2 points modifier improves and nothing special.
- con ... hp.

what do you think about?

This is like wayback machine territory ...
because No Save + No SR spells were
noticed to be a big advantage, in say 2004.

Cranking up your caster stat, gets you more
spells = Great, but also makes spells that
have Saves go from: "ignore" to Very Useful.
Triples up your fun.

yeah, i meant DC.

if str can be increased pretty easily, i'm thinking what would be better between cha and wis.

More DC or more DMM?

It depends. If nightsticks stack, DC. If not, you have to ask yourself what you want more: being almighty all day long or using spells that require a save to work. Generally, DMM favors melee (or defenses) while DC favors spellcasting, especially blasting and debuffing. Also, keep in mind the more spells you can persist, the more it loses value, since you persist the best spells first.
Oh, and stinking cloud has to be one of my favorate battlefield spells. Combined with sleet stor, you can shut a group down and keep them shut down, trapped inside a fart. When does that ever get old?

Also, quite a few feats use Turn attempts as fuel (like domain spontaneity).

Not a huge point, but something else to mention is that Wis boosts your Will save (important!) and your perception skills. Cha boosts your social skills, which will vary in usefulness depending on the mood of your DM. Your perception skills will determine whether or not you get to act in the surprise round.

Granted, it's not that hard to boost your Will save, especially with one or two PrC dips, but a good Will save is vital to any PC.
