[3.P] Int, Wis or Cha for bonus Action Points?
« on: December 30, 2012, 03:28:47 PM »
As the title says. Which mental stat would be best for bonus APs and why?

"None" is not an option. Stats other than Int, Wis or Cha are also not options. What classes or what build is used is also irrelevant, because this houserule is made regardless of that, in a vacuum, for future games. You have to pick one. I'm not interested in opinions about the houserule itself.

none of the above.

we use random fate to give action points. during the character creation process we grant extra points for rolling doubles as a holdover from some really old game we used to play. during game play, we grant a bonus action point for every critical failure that has a meaningful effect on plot and combat.

seems to work out, and makes it feel more like the workings of fate and/or chance, plus sweetens the bitter pit of failure a bit.

There are only three options - Int, Wis or Cha.

the phrasing of your question failed to preclude 'none' as a valid answer. which it is.

i was attempting to be polite. without greater detail as to why you think that action points should be somehow increased by a mental stat, i honestly think it is a stupid idea. one of my reasons for thinking it is stupid is that it will tend to widen the already unnecessarily wide gap between caster and semi-casters compared to non-casters. i only think it is stupid if you leave it unsupported by your reasoning. i will likely change my opinion once you reveal why you think this is even necessary.

I don't care what you think of the idea and it's irrelevant to the thread.
The OP doesn't say "Should mental stats give bonus APs?". It say "Which mental stat would be best for bonus APs and why?"

Charisma. It is the weakest of the three, and also the least-defined. The only thing action points represent in in-universe terms is luck, and I think I've seen luck bonuses keyed off of Charisma before, but not Intelligence or Wisdom.

Well I have heard that "Charisma is the ability of the Sorcerer to convince reality that he can in fact cast magic for no other reason but that he wants to."

This thread is just pre-crash, so your response might have been new to nijineko.

Charisma, definitely. Aside from skills, it has no affect on any basic derived numbers. Casting can make cha useful, overblown even in the case of a paladin, butif you're outside these highly specific uses, Charisma has no effect on a character whatsoever.

If you're going to leave the obvious correct answer out of the available choices, then the new correct answer become whatever you want it to be. Seriously. Who do you want to be better? Wizards, divine casters, or sorcerers? Once you've decided that, you have your answer.

Of those three choice, I'd lean toward Charisma, solely because sorcerers are weaker than the "core three", and Cha is the least useful of those stats for non-casters.

Charisma, it is often used as the attribute that defines the 'strength of soul', as seen most obviously in incorporeal/some undead bonus HP, deflection bonus from various thematic abilities, and of course the Sorcerer casting.

Both thematically and for balance's sake the best option is Charisma.....
