Black Pudding grapple = 4d6+8+4d6 acid?
« on: February 05, 2013, 12:34:39 PM »
The Black Pudding has a slam attack that deals (2d6+4 plus 2d6 acid) damage with each hit.  It also has listed under special attacks "constrict 2d6+4 plus 2d6 acid."  It has the Constrict and Improved Grab special attacks.

In the description under the Black Pudding we see this:

Quote
Constrict (Ex):  A black pudding deals automatic slam and acid damage with a successful grapple check. The opponent’s clothing and armor take a -4 penalty on Reflex saves against the acid.

This seems an odd way of noting the constriction damage, that it deals "automatic slam and acid damage" with a successful grapple check.  It already would deal that damage with a successful grapple check by virtue of having Improved Grab:

Quote
...
A successful hold does not deal any extra damage unless the creature also has the constrict special attack. If the creature does not constrict, each successful grapple check it makes during successive rounds automatically deals the damage indicated for the attack that established the hold. Otherwise, it deals constriction damage as well (the amount is given in the creature’s descriptive text).
Also, from Constrict:
Quote
A creature with this special attack can crush an opponent, dealing bludgeoning damage, after making a successful grapple check. The amount of damage is given in the creature’s entry. If the creature also has the improved grab ability it deals constriction damage in addition to damage dealt by the weapon used to grab.

So, despite the odd wording under the Black Pudding's stat block, it does deal 4d6+8 plus 4d6 acid with each successful grapple check, correct?

I guess technically it should still be two separate instances of damage (important for DR and energy resistance purposes), but that aside, its total damage dealt will still be what I listed above.

yes... constrict is a very scary ability when combined with improved grab. even more so when the monster has the Multigrab feats and multiple constricting limbs

i've got a gladiator that uses this tactic extensively and VERY successfully.

I'm playing around with the idea of running a 3.5 update of the Labyrinth of Madness, thus the question.

Just one of those tangents where you want to pause the game you're running for a few months and run an unrelated dungeon-crawl.

Gets scarier when they have several sources of constrict :)

Sounds fun

Oh, trust me, LoM plays a doozie on the PC's.  One of the first encounters in the dungeon consists of eight invisible trolls, each with a long polearm that has a black glass sphere on the end of it.  The first strike from the trolls is with the polearms, which break, releasing the (8) black puddings inside (who I think then benefit from a free auto-hit).

It is a little on the ridiculous side, somehow fitting a Huge black pudding inside a 1-foot diameter sphere.  But an easy alteration is that they had a Gargantuan Elder Black Pudding, cut it into eight parts, and each polearm holds 1/8th of the elder pudding.  Treat each 1/8 of the elder pudding pieces as a large creature unless it spends a round fusing with another 1/8th, which would grow it to Huge.
