Malconvoker + Shadowcraft Mage?
« on: February 15, 2013, 10:29:42 PM »
Is there any way to combine the two by about 15th level?  Or, alternatively, is there any way to play a summoning-focused Shadowcraft Mage?  Besides the obvious "just cast summoning (illusion) spells" approach.

I recognize this is combining two tough classes, I'm just curious, for thematic reasons, if it can be pulled off.  The idea would be for some kind of Coyote-inspired summoning character.

EDIT:  would it be enough for a Shadowcraft Mage to compete with a dedicated Summoner by being able to cast higher level spells than usual through some metamagic shenanigans?

I don't recall that Willy E. Coyote had summon abilities other than the postal service and ACME. Can you elaborate on what effects you want?

You may be able to combine those 2 classes at 15th with rebuilding, but I'm not sure though.

Coyote as in Native American, not Warner Bros.

I actually may have a build skeleton in mind.  It mostly involves using Psycarnum Infusion and Midnight Metamagic to get really high level Shadow Magic spells off the ground early -- a trick I am totally stealing from an old thread.  The idea is basically you expend your focus via Psycarnum Infusion to count your Midnight Metamagic as having max essentia into Heighten Spell, which gives you something like 3 free Heighten levels at level 13.  So, you're summoning bigger, badder things than usual, which makes up for the lack of a Malconvoker's multi-summoning.  At least that's the theory.

My problem is figuring out what else to do with the build.  It's Base 5ish (Sorcerer, Beguiler, or Wizard)/Shadowcraft Mage 5, and ...

I have no idea what else.  My spells will be real enough b/c they'll be high level, so I don't need any more shadowy stuff, and I have no idea what else synergizes with this idea.  Anything that would (a) boost summoning, (b) keep with a sneaky or deceptive theme, and (c) not really lose caster levels would be attractive.

Well, you could go with Incarnate or Totemist into Soulcaster... Start with domain wizard with the Incarnum domain, so you can get Incarnum Apotheosis.

Then you can shadowcraft Conjure Midnight Constructs.  :D

I'm also a proponent of Metamagic School Focus + Heighten to allow early access.  If your GM agrees, woohoo!

One of my players is doing this, though I don't have the link to the character build atm.

IIRC,

Cloistered Cleric / SCM / Malconvoker

DMM+Heighten entry, Akadi as deity for domain selection

Early levels used Frozen Summons, Engulf being pretty damn good
Mid levels is turning out to be Planar Binding
Later levels I assume will employ dual-summon/fiendish-legion

Super Heightened summons has been avoided for the most part as a gentlemen's agreement.
