A Newcomer Handbook?
« on: February 23, 2013, 02:18:44 AM »
BrilliantGameologists started it, but it was never published in any form, to my knowledge.  Any takers on this?

I don't think I'll really be contributing much to it, but I'm definitely saving that thread on my computer so it doesn't go poof.

So I just got back after what seems like months of work, only to find out it's been about four weeks. 3 hours of sleep a day for a few weeks messes with your head, Let me assure you.

Any takers on this?

So, I haven't touched the Encyclopedia Vinculum Draconis in a while and I'm just not quite back into the min/max mood, so maybe I'll bang my head against this for a while.

What ya looking for in a handbook?

Dang man, even your kitty avatar looks like it'd rather be under that blanket.

I would think a "handbook" of this nature would be more philosophical than mechanical.

The ultimate goal of a beginner's guide to optimizing would be to take someone who regularly creates "I'm looking for help with X" threads and get them to a point where they start regularly contributing to such threads.
So it's not enough to just tell someone that Feat A, Prestige Class B, and Spell List C, are great choices for a particular character.  You also need to explain why they are good.

The introduction would probably begin by explaining the simplest of precepts: Magic beats Mundane, Class Features are better than feats, Why Buffing, Debuffing, and Battlefield Control are all more efficient than Blasting, What IP Proofing is and why some people do it, the fact that virtually anything can be re-flavored to fit any given concept. Monkey Grip is NOT overpowered, and so on.

At some point mention Caelic's 10 Commandments of Optimization.

And his 10 Commandments of Practical Optimization.

The Tier System for Classes should also be linked to, if not explained in depth.

Mostly it would be clear explanations for the kinds of things we generally take for granted because we've been using them for years.

It should ultimately adjust the way you look at D&D character creation in exactly the same way a film studies course changes the way you look at movies, tv shows, and even commercials.  Hell maybe even bring that up at some point.
Quote
"Character Optimization will change your life.  Once you start analyzing any medium in depth, you start thinking about it critically, and it will never be the same.  CharOp is not for everybody; some people find new ways to enjoy the game by pulling a character build apart at the seams, tweaking feats, and shifting classes around.  Some people can't stand doing this, not having the time or desire to commit this many of their waking moments to a hobby."
