Greater Magic Weapon + Bane
« on: February 27, 2013, 08:41:07 PM »
Just for the sake of argument, this came to mind and i looked for official sources but couldn't find one...

Let's say i cast a 20th level GMW for a +5 enhancement on a +1, Undead Bane Longsword.

How is it considered against undead?
Option 1.) Simply +5, because it's a bigger value than the +1+2 usual enhancement
Option 2.) Add the +2 from the "Bane" to the modified +5 enhancement of the weapon, resulting in a +7 enhancement weapon against undead.

In other words, what is the "normal enhancement" referred to in the "Bane" weapon ability description? The base value? or the modified one?

EDIT: (er... math typo?)

Option 2.) Add the +2 from the "Bane" to the modified +5 enhancement of the weapon, resulting in a +6 +7 enhancement weapon against undead.
Fixed it for you.

Same as ksbs...  Do you have a shorter version of your name that you'll let people call you? said.  If it has an enhancement bonus, regardless of the source, add 2.  Keep in mind this will let you ignore DR/ epic since it's now above +5.

Psst! Look at my sig.  KSB is fine.  The name is KSB Snow Owl, I just don't like dealing w/ capitals in log-in names.

As can the Berserker property from UE (though it was nerfed to +1d8 damage when raging in MIC; I allow either version.)

I think there might be another property that can do it too. Vaguely recall seeing one recently.
Edit: I think it was a favored enemy property from MIC...

I had a small discussion on this with my brother, who is also a player, and he's more inclined to the 1st option.
I favor the 2nd option as well, but he seems pretty convinced in his opinion, stating:

The normal enhancement is +1. "Bane" puts it at +3. When you cast GMW, the enhancement goes up to +5, so only the higher bonus applies.

It sets the normal enhancement to +5. You then proceed to recalculate as if it had been +5 all along, because as far as the game is concerned, it is now a +5 weapon.

Your brother has the "order of operations" mixed up.

  • The weapon is +1 bane and functions, usually, with a +1 enhancement bonus.
  • You cast GMW on it and it's now +5 bane, and normally functions with a +5 enhancement bonus.
  • You attack the creature type bane is keyed to, and it now pushes the enhancement bonus up to +7 against that creature.
