So I'm watching the news (HLN) as I sit eating, and they're doing a story on the convention (of course).  It's a bit of a fluff piece, and the lady reporting mentioned that Ann Romney had just finished practicing her speech.  The speech was the Gettysburg Address.  I immediately cringed, gasped, and shook my head.  Then I realized: she said she was using it to practice, and not using what she was actually going to say.  I am so relieved that I can laugh instead of despair.

Back in June, Ron Paul endorsed Romney.

Just yesterday he is reported to have said: "I don't fully endorse" Romney.

Today? "Put me down as undecided."

I'm pretty sure that was Rand Paul, who's a lot less Libertarian than his father and more Conservative.

My friend saw a quote running around Facebook that went something like:

"If your a Republican you might not be a racist, but if your a racist your probably a Republican."

Seems right to me

CNN refused to comment on it, and we don't even know who it was who made the comment, so we have no way of knowing what motivated the action.  All we have is what was tweeted and confirmed by CNN, which was "black CNN camerawoman had nuts thrown at her by guy calling her an animal."  It could have been race, but I do find it a bit more likely that it was because she was from CNN, like you said.  In fact, I think it's safe to assume that it's due to her employer, it's just that it's possible that it's a race issue, and a good bit more likely than that (but still not terribly likely) that it's a combination of both.

uhh yeah, especially black humans right?

Wrong.

lets not get started with this wrong-thinking idea again.  Humans have sapience, which means they are somewhat different than all other animals.

And more-so, I think even if the person only meant it because she was a CNN employee, its still degrading to anyone to be called an animal.  I think Republicans are wrong about a lot of things, but I wouldn't call them animals.  Evil maybe, but not animals.

It was a joke. But it is an indisputable fact that scientifically, humans are animals. Get offended all you want.

Most of the stuff republicans do is offensive.  I just don't like the implication that anyone they disagree with is an animal.

Even if we use your logic, that would mean that everyone is an animal, so I'm assuming everyone should be fed that way.

We may be classified as animal, but its offensive to say we are the same as the ones fed from the floor, hows that?

To clarify things, there's a huge amount of emotional and historical baggage in the United States (and several other countries) regarding the comparison of black people to animals.

It has roots in the justification of slavery and racist pseudoscience.  US slave-holders believed that black people were closer to animals than humanity, and that forced servitude was the best way to "calm their beastly tendencies."

Update: the jerks got tossed out of the Convention.

Gah, BBC, stop that, you're better than that.  There is no evidence that the reason they did that was the ethnicity of the woman.  That whole thing is a direct result of the first headline posted about it.  I won't say that the reason was not her ethnicity, but you can't say that it was.  You cannot say anything about the motivations.  Heck, they could have been motivated because they personally knew her and hated her for some other reason.  It's not likely, but it's a possibility.  As I said earlier, the most likely motivation was her employer, and the next most likely her ethnicity.  Not the other way around.  And yes, any way you cut it, it's still wrong, but the reason might not be race, so please people, stop acting like it's been confirmed that it was race.

@darque: other animals have sapience.  And octopi are ridiculously intelligent.  And pigeons as well.  We are animals.  Pretty intelligent animals, but animals none the less.

Just to stir the pot while we're at it...

If you don't feel like reading it, it's saying that genetic evidence suggests that non-africans' genome consists of 2.5% Neandertal.  Furthermore, the article mentions the discovery of Denisovan bones in Siberia and that New Guineans have an additional 5% of their genome shared with Denisovans.  There is a Ted Talk that mentions how Samoans have the 5% Denisovan as well.

They were so sure they were 100% right, but science says otherwise.

This is all theory, but I think Rand Paul's more conservative because he's a newcomer to the GOP.  He just got elected with the help of the Tea Party, a group which has large representation and influence from the evangelicals.

Ron Paul, by contrast, has been a Congressman for his district for 20+ years and is unafraid to criticize his own party on a lot of major issues.  The Tea Party's anti-establishment as well, but very socially conservative.  Ron Paul can publicly claim that the GOP's fears of homosexual marriage is absurd; Rand Paul, by contrast, mocks Obama for his pro-LGB views in a form of a "that's so gay!" joke.
