Just to stir the pot while we're at it...

If you don't feel like reading it, it's saying that genetic evidence suggests that non-africans' genome consists of 2.5% Neandertal.  Furthermore, the article mentions the discovery of Denisovan bones in Siberia and that New Guineans have an additional 5% of their genome shared with Denisovans.  There is a Ted Talk that mentions how Samoans have the 5% Denisovan as well.
I read something in a Cracked article a few months back. I think they had slightly different numbers, but the overall result was the same.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Cracked article linked to that NPR article.  Down to the number 4 entry.

I debated a long time on where to put this, but this is about the most awesome hilarious sad and awesome clip I have ever seen from the Daily Show.  Getting convention goers to agree that abortion is a choice.  Wow.

Hate knows no boundaries.  It doesn't stop at religion, at nationality, at race, or any other lines.  When you run on hate and are consumed by it, you inevitably add more people to your list of sworn enemies.

To clarify: an influential RNC leader is hating on the Native Americans.  Muslims, African-Americans, atheists, homoesexuals, now the indigenous people of the US?  What group of people are they gonna hate in the next 20 years?

Self hate must be the origin.
Everything is edible. Just that there are things only edible once per lifetime.
It's a god-eat-god world.

Procrastination is the thief of time; Year after year it steals, till all are fled,
And to the mercies of a moment leaves; The vast concerns of an eternal scene.

Jains.  The group no one can hate. Give them 20 years and they'll be all over them like a powerful moss.

Hate, I'm sorry to say, plays well with voters.

If you want to get political power one way to do it is to hate on a minority group.  That way the majority will generally back you because they fear or mistrust those evil minorities.  Its been working for a long time now.  it worked for Hitler and it works for republicans.  In fact many of the political tactics the republicans use echo the techniques employed by the Nazis:

-Controlling Mass media (as in fox news)
-Using Film and Cinema (as in "Obama's america")
-Mythologizing the party (as in republicans are the only true patriots)
-Demonizing Political opposition (Obama is Satan or ironically, Hitler)
-Exploiting myth, and religion (As in Romney is Jesus's choice)
-Exploiting Nationalism (As in if you want your country to do better vote Romney)
-The Big lie (As, "you might be rich one day so you should support us so your taxes aren't terrible when you are")

All of the above were propaganda techniques employed by the Nazis and now the republican party.

I'm not saying the Dems don't do it too, but they seem far less egregious about it.

The Republican National Convention was a scripted circus.  All of us there should have been in clown suits as it would have been more appropriate to the venue as it played out.

We all hear politics is dirty.  We may even think politics is dirty.  Having been at this sham of a convention I KNOW politics is dirty.

I hope the Democrats have more of a real delegate process than I saw at the RNC though I sadly doubt it.

Oh yeah, just when you thought they couldn't get any worse, what they did with Ron Paul and the delegates was low, even for Republicans.

I take it being part of the process was a tad disillusioning?

The GOP and fascists both share many similarities (like the nationalism and bigotry you mentioned), but I'm wary of using Godwin's Law; almost every significant political leader and ideology has been negatively compared to Nazis by opponents.   I don't think that it's a good idea, as it weakens your position because you're demonizing your opponent to the point that you're saying he's one of the worst evils in the world.

It's sort of like how Democrats and liberals are compared to and called Communists for sharing a few things in common (regulation of big business, secularism, etc).  I don't like it when conservatives red-bait me, so I don't think that we should go down to the level of Godwin's Law.

well since you invoked Godwin's law can I invoke Gopnik's ammendment to said law?

Gopnik's Amendment', he argues that comparisons to the Nazis is justified if the individual or association embrace a world-view that contains the three characteristics of nationalism, militarism, and hatred of otherness

With respect to the current Republican party, the comparison seems pretty appropriate.

Their stance for militarism and nationalism is pretty well established.  And I'd say the current vitriol against Obama pretty much establishes their "hatred of otherness"

The Christian Right definitely does; well, maybe at least a more mild version that an Obama with a pornographic Satan tattoo.
