I wish I could find it but there was a study showing that no party has ever shrunk spending.  When republicans were in power they gutted social programs to feed the military, and when democrats are in power they reverse that trend.

Studies, books, and other materials are out there.  I was just reading some the other day showing that despite on the small government propaganda Reagan only slowed the growth of government compared to others and did not really cut anything.

If I come across it again soon I try and remember to post info for you.

Out of curiosity, has anyone from the American stock of our users thought about voting for someone outside the big two? Or perhaps even done so?

Thought about it, didn't.  Although I could have attempted to give a third party a better view in IN.  That's a good idea, actually.  Anyone in a hardcore state like mine can vote for 3rd party without consequence!  The most that can happen is that the third party gets votes and recognition!

Gary Johnson is now the most successful Libertarian candidate ever at just over 1 million votes nationwide.  The most successful third party period was Ross Perot at 19 million.  Even now rumors circulate that the small vote he got so spooked the main parties he was told if he ran again he got a bullet in the head

I've been reading about Gary Johnson and how it could be good if he got at least 5% of the votes... What would it change if he reached that figure? Did he reach it? In Brazil, no news coverage even MENTION Gary Johnson.

5% would have been 5 million...

if they had got the 5, then the next time around the gov would have paid for some campaign costs.

The popularity of people outside those parties does scare the big two. Why do you think they went to such extremes to keep Nader out of the debates back in 1992? (Or was it another election?)

If you vote for either of the two big ones, it's your fault you get stuck with their shit. It's that simple.

A first past the post system tends to having two parties.  That's the way of things.  The wiki article on it isn't bad:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-past-the-post_voting

Assuming there is an actual contest, a voter has every incentive to vote for one of the major parties.

So, this:
If you vote for either of the two big ones, it's your fault you get stuck with their shit. It's that simple.
is ridiculous and needlessly inflammatory.  It's like blaming US voters for using dollar bills.

That being said, due to the way politics and voting works in America, as opposed to say Britain, elected officials tend to cultivate personal constituencies.  And, b/c there is an overwhelming incentive as a politician to join one of the two major parties, the parties tend to be very big tents (although the Republican Party may have proven too small of one in certain key ways).  Which is to say, a Republican (or Democrat) in one state may, and often do, vary quite a bit from a Republican (Democrat) in a different state or even a different district.
