The monetary costs of purchasing scrolls and inscribing them in your spellbook are fairly small, relative to the gain of, say, incantatrix.

Do explain. However, if its really just some "techinicality", I hope its something big and not something petty. So yeah what do you mean, by this exactly?
the wizard gets his spells via his spellbook class feature, not via his spellcasting class feature. now think about it... a class which advances spellcasting, but does not mention a spellbook class feature in any way, does advance the spellcasting class feature, but not the spellbook class feature. thus, a wizard technically does not gain new spells on level up when using prestige classes.
So me ten DMs who enforce that technicality.
However its not exactly expensive to stock up...
