Absorbing Magic Items?
« on: October 05, 2013, 09:54:56 AM »
There is a good chance that I'm just going crazy, but I could have sworn that at some point I read that there was a way to permanently absorb magic items into a character, and thus give the character that items abilities as their own. Maybe it was home brew? It's just killing me that I can't find anything like that anywhere. Perhaps I just dreamed it up and wish it was real. Anyone ever heard of anything like this?

Spellfire acts like a rod of absorbtion. Dragonlance had a few feats that also absorbed charges for spellcasting. All those are transitory along with artificer which can modify items.

I did this for spellthieves. Also temp.

Can't really think of anything permanent. Oh, and graft weapon power can absorb.

Extra body slot (Dragon 359, p117) directly implants an item into your body.  The down side is, it permanently reduces your con score by 2, and you need a specially-crafted version of the item that costs 1.5 times as much as normal.

The eldritch haunt template (Towers of High Sorcery, p149) can create a creature with the properties of a magic item, but it's not available to player characters.

Adamantine skin (Faiths of Eberron, p157) or combat mod (Dragon 359, p116) are both ways of adding built-in armor to a character.  Both allow the armor to be magically enhanced later.  You can get a wide variety of magical effects on armor.

The body modifications are pretty neat. They aren't what I was envisioning though, as that still leaves them as items which can still be suppressed/dispelled. And the effects don't actually become yours. But they are a step closer than I was before.

Warforged + fussion sounds closer to what I'm trying to accomplish, but it's still somewhat limiting. Is there a good way to fuse with something permanently and in such a way as that it can't be dispelled?

A major artifact called the black elf stone (Dragon 286, p57) can devour a magic item and permanently give its benefits to the user.  This may be what you were thinking of.

Yes! That's exactly what I had read. I even skimmed that magazine earlier and missed it. Thank you a thousand times.

As a follow up question, are there any guaranteed/efficient RAW ways of obtaining the black elf stone? And if so is there a way to use the stone's power to absorb itself?

Maybe you were thinking Wild Shape/polymorph/etc. rules about items melding into your body/form.

Draconomicon/Embed Spell Focus for Dragons. I want to say there's another feat floating around out there for them to embed other items.

One of the older dragons in the realms, Hoondarah (sp?), nommed a ring of regeneration, fwiw.

symbiotes and grafts are other ways to get fun abilities.

also, the necklace from savage species allows you to applies weapon special abilities directly to your natural weapons.
