The ape is a large animal, it already had to squeeze through the 5ft hole, let alone carrying a medium creature.
Also, the animal is already trained for war. The druid trained the ape and applied the Warbeast template to it (BTW, another event that happened before my turn as DM - i'd probably not allow it, it's causing unballance issues).
