dndtools.eu has posted a copy of their sqlite database
« on: February 23, 2014, 10:15:45 PM »
See the front page: http://dndtools.eu/

I've been wishing for more powerful queries on dndtools.eu for a long time, so as far as I'm concerned, this is great news.

More powerful that exact word matches in name or description with book/class etc limiters?
Either you're quarries are far too detailed or it's been awhile since you've been to the site.

D&D Tools is everything I could ever want and hope for, they just need to finish the data base.

That announcement also says they have an android app that includes SRD-only material.  Is it possible (or even intended?) that you download the database to your phone, then somehow tell the app to use that database?
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

I dream of the day they absorb the EVD entirely.
If you have questions about 3.5 D&D, you might want to look at the:

Now you're thinking with portals.

Given that they're provided the database in the exact same post? I would presume so. :p

I use that site all the time.  I would like some of the searching to be more detailed like IMarvinTPA's.  But all in all, Dndtools.eu is absolutely awesome - I have no complaints at all.

That said, I wonder why they've had so many "502 - Bad Gateway" errors as of late. I'm guessing the popularity of the site is growing and the pipeline gets overwhelmed?  Dunno.

Yes, there are lots of queries I want to make that require more power than that.  For instance, this request by Jackinthegreen, Wanting to make a prestige class feats index, is beyond what the dndtools.eu website can do.  I don't even know if the current form of the database would support a query like that, though certainly a Perl or Python script with a SQL interface could do it easily.  With a properly-structured database, with joins and Boolean logic it would be very simple to create such an index, but dndtools.eu isn't adequate even for much simpler tasks, such as:

  • All spells that relate to charging, the special attack, while excluding spells that can be discharged for an effect.
  • All classes with features related to turning or rebuking undead while excluding classes where the only reference is in the spells per day/spells known boilerplate.
  • All classes that advance spellcasting and BAB at 1st level.

These are only a few examples, I've run across more while doing research for a guide.  This doesn't even include the weird omissions, like the inability to search classes by BAB/level, the lack of an "effect" line for spells, or (before I asked them about it specifically) prerequisites for feats.

Iainuki, the format for urls here does not use quotes.  Here's the code:

Code: [Select]
[url=websiteurl]Website name[/url]
Or just leave the url in normally like www.minmaxboards.com and any modern browser will automatically turn it into a link.

Thanks for the reference though.  Alas, I haven't received any response from them about me possibly getting on the team to add a section for prestige classes for each relevant feat.

1. Search the spell descriptions for charge, charging, discharge, touch attack, etc.
2. Who gives a crap?
3. You have an area to search by BAB and you can including "spellcasting" in the class feature list to do exactly that.
4a. Maybe if someone other than you deems the quote on quote required search terms actually useful, they will add it.
4b. You are whining about not knowing how to use the options in front of you, they are doing. The world needs less of one of those, guess which.

So what you're arguing is that having the ability to perform more powerful queries is a bad thing? There are people suggesting potentially useful improvements and there are people encouraging stagnation. The world needs less of one of those, guess which.

-Snip-

Your whole post is horribly flawed.

Since, you know, he didn't start the thread with bitching. It started with being pleased that there's effectively more options to do this stuff. You are the one that introduced all the bitching for no good reason (suspicion about someone's desired searching powers does not count as a good reason). >_>

Yeah, I've gotten that a lot lately.  I was bypassing it by google searching the specific feat/class/etc... I wanted to see and then using the cached page.  Obviously, not helpful if you didn't have a specific thing in mind or can't recall the name, but it's something.

She, please.  I'm female.

I'd like to reiterate that I'm really happy that the dndtools.eu team is doing what they're doing, it's made doing some of the things I'm doing possible at all and has made others much easier.  It's great news they've made the Android app and even better news they've published a copy of the database.  The only criticism I have is in hopes of making the site even better.

Has anyone tried attaching the database to the app? Also, how big is the database file? I only have so much room on my SD card....

I pulled down the DB last night, iirc its about 5 MB. If you're using Firefox, you can load/view/edit it easily using SQLite Manager plugin.

My players and I immensely appreciate all the work they've done.

I didn't get much time to look at the data structure, but personally I would deconstruct the data down to the most basic blocks, and then use an engine to build the data back up during presentation. Perhaps using an Object DB instead of SQL. Thus, one could more readily use it to build PCs or advanced monsters.

I had some problems with the expanded database on my Android phone but I think I'm applying it wrong.  I installed the program, then copy pastad the link from the main page, then used that with the app's upgrade database.  This causes the app to crash if you try to pull up any information.  Any tips for upgrading the database?

I got it working just now.  Not sure what you did wrong - maybe copied the url incorrectly?
