Preparing for the Battle Royale
« on: May 30, 2014, 02:37:30 PM »
I posted last week about this, and now I need more specific help on my character.

Basically the DM is gonna have a lvl 25 huge battle royale with about 7 of us. It's gonna be in a walled off arena that we can see with our eyeballs. If we leave the arena we lose, but we can teleport and go ethereal etc. inside the arena.

I'm building a character around Word of Chaos and Dictum. I figure at this level everyone will be immune to everything, so casting a spell that doesn't allow a save and kills them instantly seems like a good idea. I need ways to boost my Caster Level. All cheese is allowed. Only rules are:

1. No psionics.
2. 1 million gold total to spend on items.
3. Third party books are allowed at DM's discretion. So basically if it's not homebrew, he'll allow it.
4. No leadership-style feats or cohorts. Summoning is allowed.
5. No classes specific to a world, such as Forgotten Realms only classes.

I'll be facing gurus at this game, I want to stand a chance.

Help!

-K-

EDIT: I added two more rules the DM forgot to mention!

What are you going to do about spell immunity shadesteel golem PCs and epic magic?

How does one become immune to sonic?
Clerics are my game!

Not sure if you can make a PC shadesteel golem, as it implicitly states that the golems are mindless and need a master. I forgot to add a rule of the DM's: No leadership-like feats or cohorts. Summoning is allowed. I'll add that to the OP.

I was considering doing 10 archemage/15 wizard and doing epic spellcasting, but I don't even know the first thing about it and I'm not sure I want to spend that much time making a character I'll use for one day. If someone can simplify it I'll consider it. ^-^

A Silence spell. I wouldn't build my character around something that can be defeated by a 2nd level spell.

Those Holy Word/Dictum/FU spells are also some of the most obviously broken spells in D&D. So if I were going into an arena like this, you can bet your nutsack that I'd have immunity to them somehow (Silence spell, Greater Spell Immunity, counting as all/no alignments, etc).

Of course... I also likely wouldn't even think of getting into a level 25 one-shot arena battle... as it's way too much hassle to build such a complicated PC only to throw it away after one game...  :banghead

Silence spell won't help you against Holy Word and pals unless you're close enough for it to affect the caster (and pray they don't have a Silent Rod or something). Because you don't need to actually hear the word to be affected.

Yes, you do.

The Silence spell specifically calls out being a defense against sonic or language-dependent attacks.  Basically, all effects with a sonic or language-dependent descriptor are made useless by the Silence spell because the effect cannot penetrate the Silence area.

Caster level boosters:
Red Wizard, both from class levels and circle magic;
Strand of Prayer Beads;
Ioun Stone;
There's also a Circle Magic feat;
There are caster level loops explained in the handbook section.
Oh, and stinking cloud has to be one of my favorate battlefield spells. Combined with sleet stor, you can shut a group down and keep them shut down, trapped inside a fart. When does that ever get old?

So this Shadesteel Golem thing...

Let's assume he allows it. The level adjustment says...nothing. So I can make a Shadesteel golem with no level adjustment with all those abilities? I'm assuming the HD, saves, etc are not kept. Unless I'm assuming wrong and he DOES start with 6/9/6 saves and a 20 natural armor bonus and 18d10 HD? How would I make this character a PC, I guess is what I'm asking.

Being completely immune to spells seems awesome. Until someone wishes that my immunity goes away for a round or two. Also, what class would be suggested on a shadesteel golem PC for this fight?

Just do a dweomerkeeper with ice assassin. Make three ice assassins of great wyrm prismatic dragons and they are basically done. You could even just make ice assassins of yourself or any three of them if they are more powerful, if they can defeat you and perfect copies of themselves working on your behalf then you did something wrong.

Also, why not psionics? I feel like either these people are more knowledgeable than the DM or they really aren't as good as they think they are if they are banning psionics because they think its overpowered. If magic isn't banned there's really no reason for psionics to be.
