Feat Point-Buy
« on: June 28, 2014, 07:29:48 AM »
I am wondering if anyone knows of a system that streamlines feat construction, and/or resolves all feats in a structured point buy method. Not all feats are created equal and I would like to find a method that breaks down all the possible benefits gained and then assigns a point value to that gain.

Good luck.

A point buy system, IMHO, is inherently unfeasible because feats have different value based on situation and circumstance.  What may be a lackluster feat for most may dominate with a druid.  What might be dull on its own may break open wide when combined with two other feats.  Nevermind the sheer number of feats...

Pathfinder HAS done exactly what you seek.  It is laughably bad and misguided though, and should only be used as an example of why this doesn't work.

Yes, and it's a terrible system, from the mind of SKR.

SKR considers Toughness to be worth 10 points while both Quicken Spell and Natural Spell are each 5 points. That's right: for the cost of the feat used as the benchmark of crappy feats, SKR thinks that druids need Quicken Spell for free when they take Natural Spell at 6th level.

Now, I'm sure any of us could do a better job balancing those costs than SKR, but the overall principle is somewhat flawed. Different things are more valuable to some than others. Also, if you're getting 10 points every three levels, and we're tracking feats with a cost of 8 points, that difference in 2 points won't add up to another 10-point feat for fifteen levels. It's extra bookkeeping for next to no gain.

Ha! SolEiji pointed out elsewhere that SKR took down his system and left a whiny message in its place. I'm not sure which was more terrible.
