Hiya!
« on: November 05, 2014, 08:33:19 AM »
Hi all, I have finally joined the awesome minmax boards after much lurking.

I enjoy D&D 3.5 and 4 (much to the disgust of some of my friends  :p ), board games, video games...
Yep, all the games really. At the moment I am mainly into a fantastic 3.5 campaign run by a mate, and Borderlands.

I live in Perth, Australia, and am always LFG. It is pretty hard to get a regular group together, and I need more 3.5 times!

Nice to meet you all :)

Welcome to the Community!  :)

I didn't have a problem with 4e as a game. I had a problem calling it Dungeons and Dragons. If it was Generic Fantasy RPG X I'd have had no issues.

Hahah, yeah I can see that. I really like the neatness of it. At the moment, our DM allows pretty much anything and bends all types of rules- this is truly awesome, but also too much like hard work to research all the best stuff  :lmao

Well, that's any game system that you want to optimize in. You do research to figure out what is best or to see what other people have done.

We tried 4e once. I rolled up a Warforged Bard. He was the most memorable thing about the game.

<Smitty> "As a Warforged, I don't have all the feelings and emotions of you meat people, and sometimes that makes me feel sad."

I still don't know whether he was being serious or just messing with everybody and I was running him. XD

Hahah. That's great, characters uncontrollably taking on a life of their own is awesome.
I tend to play psychotic meat shield, so their mind sets are often pretty simple XD
I am trying to build something different to play, just to see what it feels like on the side of good :lol

Hehe, I hate playing bad guys. On my worst day I'm Chaotic Neutral.

What're you thinking about rolling up?

I'm thinking of going some kind of bard/cleric for heals and buffs. And take the flaw chivalrous (think it's called that) for pure hilarity. Some do gooder type. At the moment, my barbarian/druid makes party members for heals. Muahahah!

If you often play for the light side, what kind of characters do you roll?

I love magic, I usually roll up a Cleric or a Wizard.

My most successful character so far was a True Neutral Cleric of Sun Tzu with the Trickery and Travel domains.

But most of my character are Chaotic Good or Neutral Good.

Bards are fun. You should watch Spoony's Bardic Knock Spell video. Language Warning.

Bards are great support characters. They're a lot of fun and have a lot of character.

One character I've been wanting to make is a paladin with a focus on hunting undead, trading in his mount for a magic scythe for thematic reasons.

That video is great! I am definitely going to use the bardic knack spell (my DM loooves that kinda stuff  :D ) I think chaotic good sounds suitable for some of those bluffing shenanigans.

Also, a pally with a magic scythe sounds totally awesome.

There's an option in the Book of Exalted Deeds for that trade off, I think it was the BoED.

Hehe ya~ Spoony has some great videos. You should check the rest out.  :D Also watch the Fletch movies, they're awesome, hehehe.

I will def have to check out the Fletch movies, someone else recommended them to me as well.

Had the first play of Bleric the bard/cleric last night...oh maaan. So much awesome hilarity.
Btw how is the scythe-wielding pally going? Funnily enough one of the guys in my group last night said he was looking at making an angelic scythe-wielding paladin type as well. so if you have any pointers they would be most welcome :)

Well, I don't have a D&D game to play in so its just a concept.

If he wants to do it, have him check out the Book of Exalted Deeds. Also, he should consider making his paladin good at Use Magic Device. That way he can use wands to buff himself and be generally annoying in combat. There's a lot of good magic that doesn't really depend on beating saves but that could make him too annoying and dangerous to ignore in favor of attacking the spellcasters. That wand-focused approach works best when combined with a Artificer that can supply cheap wands. *Wields a big two handed weapon with a wand holder* *Activates True Strike Wand+Power Attack+Smite Evil*

If he wants real help he should ask on here, I honestly don't like getting too complicated when planning out my characters, the people around here are crazy good.

Yes the people here are crazy good! I always look through the threads in a combination of 'what' and 'wow' :P
I will pass on your pointers- simple tips are often some of the most effective, cheers :D

 :)

Hope it helps.

The thing about wands is, if you make a critical ultra awful failure it doesn't even consume a charge, you just can't try again for like, 24 hours. So pre-battle buffing is simple. The in-battle stuff is for when you really have a good UMD and are unlikely to fail. There's a guide to UMD Somewhere...

One Guide
Here's The Guide I Was Looking For

You have sold me on wand usage! (hahah oh what a euphemism) That dice of doom guide is neat.
I particularly like the idea of a wand of divine power ...i could cast it, but why waste spells?

Debbil Dinosaur!  :clap

I am impressed you recognised it! Devil Dinosaur is awesome  :D

The problem with a Tank Archetype in a P&P game is that without some kind of aggro mechanic like in an MMO you need to find reasons for the bad guys to attack the warrior in full plate armor over the wizard flinging fireballs.

Swinging a big two handed weapon and being too dangerous or annoying to ignore is a big part of that. The spell casters can help by not being too obvious. Don't be the asshole in the skyblue cloak throwing fireballs. Dress up like a farmer or something, or use illusions or whatever.

Using or Making choke points is another thing. A wall of stone or a wand of obscuring mist or what have you can force the enemy to choose between nothing but bad options or simply deprive them of options entirely. Characters need to be able to stand on their own and integrate as a team.
