Help & advice - Draconic sorcerer into Draconic Disciple
« on: October 18, 2024, 07:23:32 AM »
Hello everyone !

First, I'm french and i'm not very good with english, i'll try my best so if there are some weird words or mistake, I apologise in advance :)

I'm actually playing DD 3.5 in the Rise of the RuneLord campain. My character will leave the party (his believes don't fit with some party members) and i'll create a new one.

I was thinking of having some fun with a Draconic Disciple and i'll need some advice if possible :)

What do you need to know :
- I'll strat at LvL 6
- only the "classic race" are available
- No multiclassing
- no character traits, unless I use a feat for it
- no predilection class bonus by leveling (the +1 for HP or skill per level)
- I've already rolls my stats (my best rolls in more than 15 years of rpg ^^)
18 - 17 - 16 - 14 - 12 - 12

Okay so, i've made some research of course, but here are my hesitations :

- Race
I think i'm going for human but i'm wondering if a half-orc could be cool as well

- Role & stats
In my party, we have a cleric of Sarenrae, a ranger with two weapons fighting, a warrior with a great sword and cleave feat, a sorcerer of thunder (djiin bloodline i think, or something like that)
I want to be a polyvalent character and have fun playing it. In that way, I'm going to assume a fighter/caster and not being one of them only.
That's why i choose to get twice +2 stats instead of the free feat, in order to get 20 in both Force and Charisma.
Is it wrong ?
I don't know if it's a feat starved class, and I'm not sure as well about DEX & CON, which one is more important in this role ?
Dex is like initiative, CA, interesting ability (acrobatic, fly, reflex...)

In this way, i was thinking of this repartition for my stats
FO 20 (18+2 human)
DEX 14 or 16 i don't know
CON same, 14 or 16
INT 12
WIS 12
CHA 20 (17+2 human +1 4th lvl upgrade)

Which dragon color ?
In my mind, i was thinking of a character close to nastu in the Fairy Tail anime, so fire oriented with gold dragon (we have to be good characters).
Fire is it a good choise ? It's a very important choice and if many opponent ignore or resist fire, i'm in deep sh*** ^^
I don't want to go for lighting because my friend is already playing a lighting sorcerer.
And the thematic of cold or poison is less attractive to me. At least cold could be good, but you know, fire Nastu character should be fun to play :D

Feats :
Here i'm a little bit lost, there are so much, even if I know some of the best.
I was thinking about that :
Lvl 1 : power attack
Lvl 3 : thougness for more HP
Lvl 5 : magic strike (Idk is this is the correct name, but the feat which improve your weapon with free action)
Lvl 7 : Improved initiative (Bloodline feat) & ... Idk ^^

After that, here are the feat i consider :
improved initiative - combat caster (needed ?) - dodge (for more CA)
=> do I need some combat feats ? like combat expertise or weapon focus ?
=> is there some auto-include caster feat ?

Well, as you see, i've a lot of questions and it will be amazing to have your opinion or advice :)

Thanks a lots !!

Is this actually pure DnD 3.5 - or rather Pathfinder 1E, or DnD 3.PF incorporating PF material? The prediliction bonus and the bonus feats for Dragon Disciple are only found in PF. The available options will be very different between the two games, and the DD class is also different between the two.

It's Pathfinder 1e, inspired by 3.5 édition. Not entirely sure but it seems to bé that.

Does it help you ? :D

I would actually recommend Half-Elf over Human. The Half-Elf race also has an option that gets +2 charisma and +2 to another ability score of your choice, so the stats are just as good, but you can also cast spells that only half-elves or elves can cast, like Blend and (very importantly) Paragon Surge. Usually you use Paragon Surge to obtain Expanded Arcana and cast any spell on your spell list that you haven't learned when you want to. A very, very useful spell. If you use Emergency Attunement, Paragon Surge becomes even better.

For Dragon Disciple feats, I strongly recommend Favored Prestige Class (despite the name, this does not give an actual favored class bonus so it should be okay) and Prestigious Spellcaster so you do not lose spellcasting. You do not really need Arcane Strike, Toughness, or Power Attack usually, but Power Attack is fine if you want to hit enemies. Probably you should get Combat Reflexes too. If you use a reach weapon (like a longspear) you can hit a lot of enemies with Enlarge Person.

Yo should probably also get a Belt of Physical Perfection I guess. Probably 16 dex is a little better than 14 con because of ranged attacks, initiative, and stealth (and an extra attack of opportunity with Combat Reflexes), but either choice is fine. Remember you can use spells like False Life and Greater False Life for extra temporary hp too.

With your high strength and everything, you might want to use spells like Beast Shape II or Form of the Dragon I when you want to attack enemies for lots of damage.

Normally Elemental Focus and Greater Elemental Focus are not must-haves but if you want to do lots of fire damage, they are probably worth taking (probably Spell Focus and Greater Spell Focus in evocation are too). In that case, you will want to use the Blood Havoc bloodline mutation. Usually Magic Trick (Fireball) and Flumefire Rage are very strong if you want to do lots of fire damage.

Fire resistance is very common, yes, but you could use the Blood Piercing bloodline mutation. There is also the Diminish Resistance spell but it is not very good. At high levels, you can use the Star Cinder necklace if you really want. But honestly you can already kill just by turning your sorcerer into a very big and scary monster so you do not even need these fire damage spells to do lots of damage.
