Help with a dwarf Cleric in FR
« on: December 16, 2011, 09:52:07 AM »
So, I finally managed to find a game to play in.

I'm playing a NG S&B Dwarf Fighter 1/Cleric 5/Ordained Champion 1, planing Dwarf Fighter 1/Cleric 5/Ordained Champion 5/Contemplative 9.Setting is FR. Deity is Clangeddin Silverbeard. Domains are War, Wrath and Strength (swapped for Strength Devotion).

Feats so far are Power Attack, Extra Turning, Multiattack, Practiced Spellcaster (Cleric) and Strength Devotion. Planning to pick DMM: Extend (since DM banned Persist).

All looks fine and dandy, except it's been already 3 encounters where I did not swing my goddamned axe even once, because I was busy doing BFC - mostly using Nauseating Breath (SpC) and Sonic Burst, and the occasional Silence against casters, since the group does not have a dedicated Arcane Caster.

Group is Human Barb 2/Fighter 5, Human Fighter 7 going Anointed Champion, Drow Rogue 2/Hexblade 3, Gnoll Ranger 6 planning to enter some sort of 3rd party Shaman class, and Half-elf Fighter 2/Wizard 3 (just joined).

Considering this new "tendency", I am looking for Cleric spells that might help with battlefield control.

Also tips for some feats and the Contemplative domains (I initially thought about Dwarf and Temperance) is appreciated. Any books, as long as I run it over the DM.

Thanks  :)

I take it ToB is banned?  Otherwise why all the fighter?

DMM extend is a fairly poor choice.  Rods of extend are cheap, the minor one is only 3000.
I suggest DMM quicken so you can do battlefield control as a swift action and then possibly have more chances to swing your axe. :)

Yep.

DM said "ToB is so animey it can only be used on a campaign made specially for it."  :rolleyes

Ordained Champion 4 allows me to automatically Quicken anything from the War domain.... so I thought it would be redundant to pick DMM Quicken...

Also, I guess it's worth noting that due to some plot reasons, my next feat is Leadership. The cohorts I can choose? 2 Human Fighter 5  :banghead

I will try to talk the DM into letting me change one of those to Marshal, at the very least...

Run.

I can't.... if I do, I won't be able to enjoy playing a game as a PC...

I could try to reason with him, but actions like that end up making me leave the group...

While quickening War Domain spells is nice, the War Domain doesn't have too many battlefield control or debuff spells.

Pretty much just Divine Power and Flame Strike seem worth it regularly. Good buff and mediocre blast. :P

Well... that's true.

I just need to make sure I have enough Turn Undead to use it regularly...

Also, any other BFC spell worth looking into?

Small update: the Fighter/Wizard in the party is gonna be anything that doesn't have Wizard levels... because using spells is too hard  :banghead

And last saturday we had another session... and the DM threw a small horde on us, almost killing the Barbarian/Fighter and the Drow...

I am new to this group, but it seems the DM likes to run low-magic campaigns... right now only the Fighter 7 possesses a magic weapon; I have an adamantine waraxe... no one else has anything worth mentioning.

I've been thinking on picking Quicken Spell at 9 (screw plot-induced Leadership), DMM at 12, Extra Turning at 15 and 18.

Tactics I've been thinking on using in order to increase our chances of survival (up to 3rd level):

-Hold Person something, party member uses CDG on it;
-Ebon Eyes on party + Darkness for free miss chance
-Spiderbind (some slow)
-Nauseating Breath;

Any other spells worth looking into?

I find Stone Shape to be useful in most situations.
Dark way (SpC) is a 4' wide wall of force.
Wind Wall gets rid of small creatures and ranged attacks.
Doomtide from Magic of Faerun is a way of generating extra actions.
Haboob and Wall of Salt (Sandstorm) are good double threat and battlefield control, respectively.
Normally, I would be reading this, open the reply box, decide what I had to say didn't need said, and close out. But this is just too ridiculous.

Ice Slick from frostburn is like an enlarged grease, very helpful

But I'd be more worried about the game itself- no magic items, restricting everybody to sub par options and overall lopping off the best parts of the game? He sounds like a gygaxian grognard of the worst variety. Long talk is the best option, otherwise it will only get worse, probably involving big walls of DM fiat everywhere when you do something cool or use BC spells.

Well... I have the exact same fear.

Also, I've seen him fumbling some rolls (most in favor of the players, some in favor of Team Monster), but it seems I am the only one that noticed it...

Let's see how it goes for now...
