I'll leave this with parting words concerning intelligence and its role in society:
"Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad."

And Charisma is putting it in a fruit salad anyway then selling it to some poor bozo.

I've taken 3 separate standardized tests and gotten results that would get me admission (although not necessarily free-ride tuition) at any college I want, up through the most hoity of the toity Ivy League schools.

Statistically speaking, if you put me in the same room as about 600 other people, then I'm probably the smartest person in the room.

On the other hand, I'm a "put up or shut up" kind of guy.  I'm still stuck doing relatively menial work getting through sophomore-level classes and paying for college with a job programming in PHP of all fucking things, but given some time I might be able to piece together the ideas I come up with in my free time now and do something relatively epic (although, unfortunately, I'll feel kinda unoriginal doing it).

EDIT: Also, I echo the "standardized tests are crap" sentiments in this thread.  I study math, so I know the meaning of "probably," and I have definitely found myself in situations where I wasn't the smartest person in the room.

Doubly so for any self reported IQs, with tests being all over the place to begin with. Still, can be fun.

Read a curious study about a man who took the Mensa IQ test and scored around 120. Then he was adviced to do certain activities for two weeks, he for example had to do a few tasks with his left hand instead of right, and take a different route to work every other day, and so forth. Increased his score by 15 poinst or so.

In any case, haven't tried a reputable test. I kind of wish I had, but it's no big deal.

Edit: To be fair, taken a bunch of online ones and the results have been rather consistent. Not sure what to think of their accuracy though.

I forgot my meaningless IQ score from over a decade ago and my online test: kicking the shit out of 140+ idiots on forums results come back as super genius and Florida demanded a recount so I can't even use those results. But since I think IQ tests are so worthless that opening a thread asking about them basically amounts to one giant pissing contest where everyone shows up thinking they should squeeze a ketchup packet into the urinal I'm willing to let those fly. ... Oooh a snazzberry flavored window to lick.
*cough* That wasn't snazzberry.
Now where was I? Oh yeah, I wanted to point on that everyone posting hearsay on 'above average' which ironically makes them 'average' within these confines and the mentioning online validly as some sort of act of humility while bragging about a high number in a post totally and absolutely focused on hubris is like an oxymoron thing comes together in one hell of a narcissistic fashion. I love it.

I voted that I am downright fracking retarded and it's true. I've long passed the mark where I learned I know so little it isn't funny and moved to learning enough not to kill someone as my goal. But damn I have a such a huge ego to make up for it, but so do you guys. Let's be awesome together!

P.S. Srsly, I'm just acting out. Someone read my sig already. :(

IQ is a measure of problem solving capability not knowledge. That said I would fully expect the average IQ of a fairly abstract thought intensive forum like this to be significantly higher than the global average.

Right. While problem-solving is fairly important, the actual numbers matter almost as much as a person's pre-College grades (which is just a measure of effort).

A person's true intellect can only be guessed, and only through interacting with that person.

Also, problem-solving capabilities can be trained. As such, it is not unusual for people who have a keen interest in things that involve problem-solving similar to many IQ tests to score higher than naturally intelligent people who have put their focus elsewhere. IQ is just a way of measuring an aspect of someone's intellect rather than give an absolute statement about how smart someone is.

I believe The Onion said it the best when they described Mensa as "A group of people who score well on a certain kind of standardized tests"

That being said, I've taken approx. 5 IQ-tests. No one has ever corrected a single one of them  :D

While I have no reason to believe people are lying about their scores, I often feel the collective IQ of the forum is 42.

Considering that the bulk of users on a given forum are bots (even if they can't post), you might not be off the mark.
