Burning a hole in my pocket
« on: March 05, 2012, 12:50:49 PM »
I'm currently playing a Xeph warlock (5th level, blaster, headed for Hellfire Warlock). I had all of my stuff taken away a couple of levels ago by slavers and the loot has not been forthcoming since. The organization we work for has decided to give us some money for our third trip into the Underdark. Cave/temple/Drow outpost-style adventure.

They gave us 2000gp, so I have:

A standard adventuring kit
A scroll of ghoul touch
3000gp

Invocations: Eldritch Spear, Sickening Blast, Baleful Utterance

Darkvision
UMD check of +11, Deceive Item

He's been pretty permissive so far on what books we can use, but I'm sensing a coming snapback if I stray too far past core+completes. Feel free to suggest outside of those, though.

Thanks in advance!

Some ideas:
+1 Mithral Chain Shirt
Masterwork Morning Star
Healing Belt (MIC)

... so basically you're playing a No Gear game.
And that's with a class that has a rather specific Gear making role.

Divine Minion template is LA+1.
Immediate buy-off and it'll go away soon.
Druid the rest of the way.
Start making stuff only after the DM relents.
Then pick Natural Spell feat.
"But I'm a below average Druid, and the Warlock part barely functions, right ?!"
 ;)

Actually, no. It's more of a convergence of rapid level gain from beating a high-level encounter on wits alone and running away from an army of drow that we just keep on pokin'. We'll have enough chain shirts and rapiers to outfit our own army in a couple more sessions. :D
But that doesn't do us much good right now.

Gorfnab: Why specifically a mithral chain shirt? Curious what extra that would do for me.

For a warlock? Nothing. Mithril is nice when you have 1,000 gp to blow because you can sleep in it and wear it under clothes, but that's really all it will do for you, other than halving the weight.

The first mithril thing I'd buy as a warlock would be a mithril buckler (for 0% ACF). A +1 mithril buckler would only cost you something like 2,015 gp for +2 AC. I'd buy it ahead of the standard Ring of Protection +1 or Amulet of Natural Armor +1 since it's double the protection for the same cost. Not that I'd buy it at this point, but I'm just saying that I'd get it ahead of the ring and amulet.

If you can get ahold of Anklets of Translocation (MIC), you get a short range 2/day teleport that can get you out of grapples and other sticky situations, although I think it costs something like 1,800 gp, so it's pretty pricey when you only have 3,000 to spend.

2 items I would advise:
-Anklet of translocation (1500gp): teleport as swift aciton 2/day. everyone can use this.
-Artificer's monocle (1500gp): whenever you cast detect magic and focus for a bit on an item, you get a component-free identify. Practically custom-made for warlocks about to come across some magic loot.

3.5 is disappointingly flawed.

A +1 Twilight mithral shirt, on the other hand, can be nice.  0% ACF, 0 ACP, +5 AC.  Costs 5100gp, though, so it's currently out of the price range.
What do I win?
An awesome-five for mentioning Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness.

Feycraft (DMG2) Mithral Shirt with Thistledown Padding (RotW). 0% ACF, 0 ACP, +4 AC, costs 1850 gp.

Oh, they're only 1,500. That's even better.

It'd be nice for a wizard, but warlocks are already proficient in light armor and can use their invocations in light armor with 0% ACF.

Got them mixed up with Dragonfire Adept, then.  DFAs aren't proficient.

If you can consistently hit DC 25 with a Use Magic Device check, the heartstone from a night hag is only 1,800 gp, core, and pretty sweet.  You'll want to be using it as if you were a night hag though, hence the UMD check (emulate a race).

"I doubt she's going to make a DC 111 Fort save, anyway."

Oh boy! I remembered the hundred's digit being even, but I was thinking 1,800, not 1,400.

Makes sense.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. another question: I have a leap attacking charger. Would using the anklet to teleport ten feet straight up count as a) a charge, b) a leap attack, and c) falling object damage negatable to myself only with a DC15 Jump check? :D

Definitely does not count as a charge because there is no generation of momentum (and it is a swift action).
