Enhancing Incarnum?
« on: March 21, 2012, 03:45:37 PM »
Alright, I have a question for you all:

Can I make any weapon formed out of Incarnum (Incarnate Weapon, any of the Totemist Natural Weapon binds, etc...) into a magic weapon?

More specifically, could you shape an Incarnate weapon, and then designate it as your Signature weapon as a Kensai?

I don't think so.  Every 24 hours your melds unshape automatically, so you wouldn't have time to change it, and even if you did, they'd lose the bonuses after you unshaped them.

ON the flip side, you have given me a pretty good idea for a Soulknife remake: modify the Incarnate Weapon meld, and focus on combat more than melds.

Actually, they don't auto-unshape; you actually have to pick which soulmelds you're getting rid of, and keep the ones you don't want to replace.

Page 49, second-to-last paragraph, of Magic of Incarnum.

So, if I choose not to Reshape my Incarnate Weapon, I can totally enchant it, right?

Hmm, I thought they did, so in my minor fixes to the system I made that not happen (I made it so you can spend a full minute to shape a meld, a swift action to remove a meld, and standard action to bind a chakra).

Well, either way, I'm still not sure you can, because it's not a physical weapon that you can just leave somewhere.  If you bind it, you might have a better case (because it's solid now), but it's certainly not intended to be allowed for this to happen.  I think they kind of ignored that and didn't add a rule.  They certainly intended them to block items (as in, not be able to be enchanted, if you can enhance Incarnum Weapon, you can enhance any other meld with appropriate body slot abilities), so it's certainly implied that you can't do this.

If I were you, I'd just ask for some DM fiat, and if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go modifier my incarnum changes to include a clause prohibiting the enhancement of melds.

I would think there would be nothing to stop a Kensai from making an Incarnate Weapon his Signature Weapon. You may also be able to pull Ancestral Weapon shenanigans with an Incarnate Weapon.

Hmmm...

You would have the coolest backstory ever:

"You see this sword? It IS my ancestor's souls. So shut up and sit down."
"There is happiness for those who accept their fate, there is glory for those that defy it."

"Now that everyone's so happy, this is probably a good time to tell you I ate your parents."

As a DM I would allow that simply because of the awesome flavor.  And of course, you could overlap the enhancement bonuses, so you could have a +1 whatever enchantments you want, and then increase the enhancement bonus by dumping essential into it.

You still wouldn't be able to enhance it via normal means though.  just class features like Kensai.
