Natural Weapons
« on: April 02, 2012, 03:27:31 PM »
I remember that natural weapons count as light weapons, but I can't find where it says this.  Help?

Also, are there any spells or effects, etc. that can change the damage type of natural weapons (like making a bite do slashing damage or whatevs)?

Hello,

I think it comes from weapon finesse but I'm not sure if this can be treated as rule to natural weapon as general or only in terms of using weapon finesse with natural weapon.

Weapon Finesse [General]
Prerequisite

Base attack bonus +1.
Benefit

With a light weapon, rapier, whip, or spiked chain made for a creature of your size category, you may use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on attack rolls. If you carry a shield, its armor check penalty applies to your attack rolls.
Special

A fighter may select Weapon Finesse as one of his fighter bonus feats.

Natural weapons are always considered light weapons.

Hope this helps,
Pelzak

Yeah, the weapon finesse entry is the only mention of natural weapons being light that I know of.  Of course, there aren't many other cases where it would matter, so...

As far as damage type changing, I don't know of any off hand.  It's a little odd to begin with, since damage type is determined by the type of attack, and not the actual natural weapon used.  eg. all Bite attacks are B/S/P, Claw and Talon are S/P, Gore is P, etc.

I'll keep looking though, there may be something that I'm not remembering.

The idea is to use Snowflake Wardance. + Alter Self.  SW requires "any slashing melee weapon you wield in one hand."  Can this work?

So you want to use your natural weapon for that?  It seems like it would work, since all claw attacks are slashing.  As long as your DM is one board with "natural weapon = melee weapon" you should be all set.

Claw attacks, sure.  But I can get other types of natural weapons, like wing buffets or tail slaps.

Hrm, you might be able to get away with a Necklace of Natural Weapons with Morphing on it.  Or just go for the mundane solution of tail blades/wing blades.

Power Attack mentions it, also.

You can’t add the bonus from Power Attack to the damage dealt with a light weapon (except with unarmed strikes or natural weapon attacks), even though the penalty on attack rolls still applies.
