[PF] Poison doses and usage
« on: May 20, 2012, 05:04:34 PM »
So, I looked up and down but I cannot tell for the life of me what effectively consumes a dose of poison upon a successful use. I know the dose is NOT consumed upon accidental poisoning, and that's pretty much it. Does an injury/contact poison dose get used up after one successful strike? Two? More? Wouldn't one attack per dose get expensive WAY too fast?

One dose inflicts one save on one successful strike, but theres no rules against applying multiple doses to your weapon, except that only one dose is delivered per strike. If you miss, the dose is not expended, but if they save it is.

There are ways around it. The Alchemist has the Sticky Poison discovery to make one dose last up to Int strikes, which makes poison use massively more affordable.
Everything is edible. Just that there are things only edible once per lifetime.

Thanks Veekie. I'll have to keep that in mind.

EDIT: Also, there ARE rules on applying multiple doses - or more specifically, delivering them - which mean an increase in DC and frequency of attribute damage. It's actually a good thing. Any other ways to make poison last longer?

There are two weapon enchanments from Drow of the Underdark you might wanna look up. I think they are called Toxic and Virulent, but I don't have the books nearby right now.

One makes each poison last for two hits, the other makes the secondary effect take effect after 5 rounds (instead of 10 rounds = 1 min).

Hope those help
/Yirrare

Edit: They are both +1 enchantments iirc.

Not much really.
And do note that each hit can only land one dose, and they must fail the initial save for further doses to stack DC, so spamming low DC poisons won't do much unless at least one dose gets through.
Getting a poison with a decent base DC, using Concentrate Poison and Sticky Poison together is about as much as I think can be managed. You could plausibly see if the DM has mechanisms for making stronger or unique poison recipes? Past the early levels getting a decent DC on the poison is an especial pain in the wallet, though you could make a case for converting cheap poisons to inhaled form and then delivering multiple doses at once that way.
