Near Infinite Wizard/Sorc Spell Selection Build Critique
« on: May 22, 2012, 03:53:42 PM »
Race: Any
Class: Wizard 5/Geometer 2/ X anything that advances spellcasting

Alternate Class Feature: Spontaneous Divination
Feats:1. Any
3. Any
6. Versitile Spellcaster (Qualified for via Spontaneous Divination)
Remaining Feats open as well.

Items: Boccobs Blessed Book

So basically what we are looking at here is a wizard who can spontaneously cast any spell in his spellbook at any time by sacking two spell slots of one level lower. Essentially the wizard halfs his total spells per day in order to achieve extreme versitility. If we throw in some rings of wizadry and a lot of Int boosting options our spells per day increases dramatically. The use of Geometer and Boccobs Blessed Book was meant to minimize the cost per spell inscribed and to reduce the pages required per spell to 1 page per spell.

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Uncanny Forethought is a little easier, I would say.  Plus Sanctum-downed Twinned Lucubrations and Conversions can rewrite your entire spell list.

Well, I can see you getting Mount and Phantom Steed.  Not sure how many other equine-related spells there are.

Can you explain exactly how this trick works?  I'm not getting it, even after glancing over Geometer again.

He wants Geometer 2 for the Book of Geometry ability which will allow him to scribe much more spells into his spellbook.....
But the real trick is Versatile Spellcaster which allows him to use two lower-level spell slots to cast a spell one
level higher....

The feat Versitile Spellcaster (Races of Dragon) lets a caster sacrifice two lower level spell slots to cast one spell of 1 level higher than the two slots you sacrifice. It requires the caster to be able to spontaneously cast spells. (Which I wizard normally cannot do.)

In Complete Champion there is an alternate Wizard class ability called "Spontaneous Divination." It allows a wizards to sacrifice a currently prepared spell to spontaneously cast a divination spell scribed in their spellbook of equal of lower level.

Using Spontaneous Divination a wizard qualifies for the feat Versitile Spellcaster. Now if a wizard leaves two spell slots open in his spells per day he may choose (at any time) to sac both those spell slots to spontaneously cast any spell he knows (aka spells in his spellbook) that is one level higher than the spells sacrificed.

Ex: I leave two 4th level spell slots unmemorized for the day. I lat decided I want to cast a 5th level spell I did not memorize for that day. I sacrifice both my 4th level spell slots and can now spontaneously cast ANY 5th level spell I have scribed in my spellbook.

*Geometer allows me to only use 1 page to scribe a spell no matter the spell level. (Aka I level nine spell only takes up 1 page with Geometer vs 9 pages.)

*Boccobs Blessed Book has 1,000 pages in it and ANY spell scribed into the book only costs 25g per page.

So with Geometer 2 and a Boccobs Blessed Book I can put 1,000 spells into one spell book for the bargain price of 25,000g.

Now with the combo above I can spontaneously cast ANY of those 1,000 spells at any time. Very powerful versitility.

But now the thing is, how does one get access to 1000 spells to scribe into the Boccob's Blessed Books? Might as well get a DM that allows Dragon Magazine stuff and get Knowstones and just be a sorceror. Buy a lot, and get all spells as a sorceror.

*yawn*

1. Get a Runestaff with Arcane Fusion.
2. UMD the staff to pretend Arcane Fusion is on your spell list.
3. ???
4. Profit.

Ah, I see.  This is all driven by Versatile Spellcaster, then, and the difference in the way a Wizard "knows" spells vs. the way a Sorcerer or other spontaneous caster does.  It might beg for DM Rule 0ing, though, as it's a pretty generous interpretation of the term "knows."

Actually for the most part it's pretty much like this all the time. I mean, there is in fact rules for leaving slots open to later fill. So on an average day a Wizard is 15 minutes away from almost any given Wizard Spell. And certainly by no means are you capped at one book either, so yeah half the trick is a gold saver.

You can read more into detail on my little guide: Here
