[3.5]Ninja - A Step-up
« on: June 27, 2012, 11:09:06 PM »
Okay, so in the spirit of the Hexblade and the Knight, I've also worked on the Ninja a bit.

Ninja
Hit Die: d6
Alignment: Any
Important Stats: Dex>Int>Wis>Con>Cha>Str

Class skills: Balance, Climb, Concentration, Decipher Script, Disable Device, Disguise, Escape Artist, Forgery, Hide, Jump, Listen, Move Silently, Open Lock, Perform, Search, Sense Motive, Sleight of Hand, Spot, Survival, Swim, Tumble, Use Magic Device, Use Rope.
Skill Points Per Level: 8 + Int modifier

One thing to note is that I'm a believer that you need X minutes of down time between encounters to refocus your mind/catch your breath/etc. So whether X is 5 minutes in your game or 15, know that you can't just start/end encounters at will to stay invisible forever. ;)

Tome of Battle has established the normal downtime at 5-minutes, and I think that's a solid starting point. After all, any round/level buffs will be over by that point.

Hrm...seen this? Could meld/borrow some of the concepts.
Everything is edible. Just that there are things only edible once per lifetime.
It's a god-eat-god world.

Procrastination is the thief of time; Year after year it steals, till all are fled,
And to the mercies of a moment leaves; The vast concerns of an eternal scene.

Is this a direct port of the BG version?  Because I'm using it for my houserules, and if so I'd like to update the link.  :)

Yes, it is. I ported over my Knight, Ninja, and Hexblade. I haven't made any changes from the port, yet.

veekie, I haven't read any PF. What abilities do you think would mesh well?

I'm thinking giving access to Ninja tricks(they got a sizable list there) rather than just Ghost Step could be good, plenty of ways to burn ki too.

My ninja doesn't use per day mechanics like Ki, though. I'm really not a fan of per day abilities. Per encounter for non-casters seems almost like a necessity to me. Although maybe per encounter Ninja Tricks could work. I'm gonna put some thought into this...

You might get some use out of making certain skill tricks into ninja tricks that can be used more often than once during an encounter.

Well, Encounter ki pool could do similarly.

If I turn Ghost-step into a Ki/encounter ability and make ghost-step one of the choices, is giving a new ability every 2 levels, like the PF ninja tricks too much? The class has so much as it is.

I'm thinking every 4 levels, so 2, 6, 10, 14, 18.

Current abilities I'm thinking of include:
Ghost Step (Turn invisible for one round)
Ethereal Step (Turn ethereal for one round)
Superior Ghost Step (As superior invisibility for one round)
Sixth Sense (See invisibility 1 round)
Demon's Sight (120' sight through mundane and magical darkvision for 1 round)
Deflect Arrows (Immediate action to deflect a ranged attack)
Pressure Point (1 Str or Dex damage when Sneak Attacking)
Assassinate (standard action study (1 ki) second round sneak attack (1 ki) and can't be identified before - fort or die)

That's not a lot. Most of the ideas from PF don't use the ki pool. I could work with these, but is it worth it?

You could add a few more I think, I could see some kind of double jump/water walk like ability as well, by creating a 1 round duration Floating Disk under your feet. Maybe spit poison as well, with extra attacks, ki speed, substitution techniques and limited illusions.

Double Jump is brilliant. :lol I love it.  I was thinking wall walking rather than water walking. That works well. I can work with that.  Ki speed's not bad. But what do you mean by substitution techniques?

Basically that thing ninjas do where you attack them and wind up hitting the nearest log instead(because they swapped positions with the log)

You might want to add something on to Great Acrobatics to allow retraining in case the ninja took a feat (like Agile Athlete).  Something like "If the ninja has taken the Agile Athlete feat she may choose to retrain it and gain a feat in its place for which she meets the prerequisites."  Alternately, you might have an additional rule that if the ninja takes agile athlete she gets a +2 bonus on those skills or something.
