Please Help to Stat the Members for a College of Magic
« on: July 30, 2012, 04:01:00 PM »
I'm in the process of designing a campaign around an academy of magic, and I need help stating out the teachers and other various staff members. Eventually, maybe I'll run it as a PBP, but for now, I'm just setting out to design the campaign(anyone who is interested in helping create such a campaign, PM me). I figure 3.5 WotC(including dragon and Web) but probably not much homebrew. I'm still working on house rules, but I don't think I'll have any that will drastically effect anything. I'm coming to the boards, as you have been remarkably helpful to me in the past.

Oh, and a bit of a twist: Gestalt(PRCs on both sides, dual PRCs allowed), fractional BAB/saves, Max HP, Flaws(max 2), Traits, free regional feat approval.

All characters should have some form of arcane/incarnum/or binding ability
Character 1: The Headmaster
CR15ish, the headmaster, probably should have few prohibited schools, if any, and be able to handle any situation. I'm thinking Elven generalist PRCing into Mage of the Arcane Order.

Character 2: The group's Teacher
He'll be able to interact with the PC for a bit right before each major combat encounter to give advice and help them
CR12ish, Buff specialist maybe(?), war-weaver and Spell-guard of Sliverymoon sound thematically appropriate, Dragonfire inspiration might work too

Character 3: BBET(Big Bad Evil Teacher)
CR13ish,  Very open to ideas here, tentatively thinking either summoner(malconvoker maybe) or undead specialist to put something between him and the PC's besides basic mooks

Character 4: Equipment Specialist
Will craft/make/acquire all the gear for the PC's
CR10-13ish, Almost guaranteed to be artificer
Smile beautiful. It's not as bad as you think.

You could make a teacher for each school of magic, plus a few related concepts.

Example:

CR 12, levels in Conjurer, Master Conjurer, and possibly Nar Demonbinder.
Feats: Skill Focus (Knowledge Planes), Spell Focus (Conjuration).
Teaches "Introduction to Planar Cosmology", "Planar History", "Planar Biology", "Ins and Outs of the Blood War", ...

CR 13, levels in Enchanter, Mind Bender, Bard.
Feats: Skill Focus (Diplomacy), Spell Focus (Enchantment).
Teaches "Negotiation Techniques (Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced)", "Introduction to Charms and mind domination"...

And so on...

That's not a bad idea, and I might just do so. Then make each teacher the center of their own encounter. I'll still need help with the ones listed above, and maybe more to stat the rest of the teachers.

What's the op level you're looking for?

I'd be happy to help with the campaign design, though I must deplore your lack of homebrew :P

Um, decently high, I expect the players will probably be frequenters of this board, not to mention open gestalt. I'm not normally allowed it, so I'm not real familliar with any of it. However, players can use it once I have the campaign ready and pending approval of course. I'd be glad for the help with the campaign.

Alright.  I'll optimize, and you can tell me if I go too far... ;)  Assumptions: all wotc, dragon mag, and a small-to-moderate amount of homebrew.

Illusions teacher and/or headmaster (can handle everything, ECL 15): Changeling dual-specialist Wizard 5/Knight of the Weave 1/Ultimate Magus 9 // Trickster Spellthief 7/Heartfire Fanner 3/Shadowcraft Mage 5.  Feats: Practiced Spellcaster, Master Spellthief, a bunch of metamagic, and Arcane Disciple: Luck.  Shadow Miracles for everyone, with an ENORMOUS CL.

Is this too high-op?

Looks interesting, off hand I'd say that's at the high end of the optimization I'm looking for. If you want to help with more than just the characters, pm me. I'll go through the build once I'm off work to look at it in more detail.

Yes, though only on illusion/trans spells.  I realized you don't need Practiced Spellcaster, but you DO need Theurgic Specialist.

Wizard 15 levels
Spellthief 14 levels
Knight of the Weave 7 levels + 15 wiz + 14 spellthief = 36
Arcane spells +3 spell power

Illusion/Transmutation: 36+15+14+3 = 68
Anything else: 36+15+7+3 = 61

Also should have Reserves of Strength, unless that's too high-op ;)

I suggest making the Gymteacher a Grapplemancer, Dwarf Wizard in a pointy hat and tracksuit, octopus familiar and using the +grapple spells, quite physical for a Wizard.

He won't be fighting the PCs, so, no, that should be fine. Would he need heighten spell+ versatile spell caster?

That's a hilarious mental image, but I figure a gestalted duskblade would be the melee combat teacher.

I'm pretty good at grapplemancers (wrote the grappling handbook), so we could def. do one of those.

Music teacher is a no-brainer -- Heartfire Fanner, of course.  What, you thought I was going to say bard? ;)

We need an Literature teacher too. Geometer and Runesmith? Needs as many of the "read->die" effects as possible.

We need a weapons' master, a grapple specalist, and a targetteer

Yeah, that could work -- sucks that we're stuck with arcane spellcasting.  For example a Glyphwalker could work for that as well... or an Archivist, of course.

There are a number of gish builds that could work for the weapons master.  What do you mean by a targetteer?  Like a Mailman?

Technically it can be any non-divine method. I figure binders/incarnum users/truenamers even psionics would have their place.

The janitor is a truenamer! He's sometimes pulled into class as a cautionary tale.

Doesn't dweomerkeeper need divine casting?

As for truenaming, isn't there a way for arcane casters to use it in a limited fashion to augment their casting?

Yes, a single level of cloistered cleric is an easy dip in gestalt.

Or alternatively alternate spell source and a way to pick up a domain.

http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20040522a

REQUIREMENTS
To qualify to become a dweomerkeeper, a character
must fulfill all the following criteria.
Skills: Knowledge (arcana) 8 ranks, Spellcraft
8 ranks.
Feats: Any item creation feat and any metamagic
feat.
Spells: Ability to cast arcane and divine spells.
Domain: Magic.
Special: The candidate must have created at least
one magic item, whether of a permanent nature or not.
