I don't get it either, but I don't mind it either way.

I mean, I recently discovered there's this channel that, at certain times, reruns the 80's version of He-man. I've actually taken to watching it on occasion... and if you stop to think about it it's kinda magipunk Conan for kids. However, adults can actually enjoy the show on some level, even if that level is based on nostalgia alone. So, I guess I can understand to a point what draws adults to MLP.

Likewise.
I did watch the first 2 episodes just so as to know what people are talking about, and it's not bad for a 'kids show', imhop, but I don't see why it's a big deal.

I know it sounds kind of cliche, but the first two episodes really aren't indicative of the rest of the series.  Still, to each his own.  Hopefully no one here is like FOX news in their disdain for it.

First I've heard of that, but I ignore them anyway.

I do get strange tastes and quirks. What i don't get is the *devotion* bronies give for this show. I'll never understand it. What's *so* special about this specific show that makes you want to fantasize about being it's characters? That makes you want to collect  a lot of merchandise about it? Blow literally thousands of dollars in it?

Most of my disbelief in that regard comes from the fact that it's a kid show, but i really don't get obsessions in general. Like hardcore otakus and stuff.

Oh, don't get me wrong, i TOTALLY understand the people who collect a few figurines about that one show they really like, especially if it's really interesting and well made, like people that collect all the Saint Seya Bronze/Silver/Golden Warriors, or people that have a few Gundam Mecha. I'd even get people that have some MLP merchandise because they really like it.

But... https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=SwKkRzJ0GDs and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmIG9sBOFQY ........ This kind of stuff makes me wonder about some people's stability.

I mean, seriously, if my son (now almost 2 months old), became like that when he grew up, having this amount of unhealthy obsession about something, i'd intervene. For real.

I definitely agree that such huge collections are ludicrous and I would intervene for a loved one if they got to a point like that with anything.

I suppose part of it is it appeals to people who are a bit odd in the head from the start.  I'm certainly no exception to that, but I would never get that sort of stuff because I am not sentimental and don't need much to remind myself of certain things to get an emotional connection anyway.  It's like they're getting high off their possessions when oddly enough the show has a bit of an emphasis on getting high on life itself and simply enjoying it.

There are people that get that obsessed over other shows as well, I think you're just trying to hard to understand brujon.  I really doubt that there's any way someone could explain a hardcore obsession in a way that someone who didn't feel like that would understand and get it.

That's precisely my point. Something so weird that cannot be explained to others is unhealthy, it's beyond just not being normal. I bet most of the people here at some point have gotten flak because of their D&D hobby at some point in their lives, be it at high school or later/earlier periods in life. But it's not something that can't be explained to normal people. It's an unusual hobby, because there's not that many people that are into it, but it's not so weird. But how can you explain a wall made of Hatsune Miku papers, with dozens of Hatsune Miku figurines enshrined throughout the room, and your entire music librabry consisting of Hatsune Miku songs and remixes, while you yourself try to mimic her style as much as you can, going so far as crossdressing as her? Substitute Miku for My Little Pony, or anything else. It's beyond not being normal, it's plain unhealthy...

It's like this one girl i saw on T.V the other day. She was a hardcore, die-hard Justin Bieber fan. Everything about her was about Justin Bieber. She even cut her hair in order to try to emulate him. She was bullied at school, no one wanted to be friends with her because of her unhealthy obsession, and yet she continued to increase her obsession and call herself his #1 Fan, until she was noticed by some T.V Station that arranged a meeting with him. But do you feel it's normal to make your whole life about something to the point where you drive friends and family away, kill your social life, and become a complete alien to society?

I get strange and secret hobbies that people have that reflect their individual personalities, etc. What i don't get is people that have obsessions so great that they think it's ok to do their utmost to reflect their obsession everywhere in their lives, and Bronys are one of the hardest to understand, in my opinion, because it's a kid show, and it's targeted at a female audience. It's alien to see grown men that not only like but worship the show...

People very often have enormous obsessions and reflect them in their life. Just that most of these are not usually entertainment based. Also it's getting to be a pretty big derail, maybe it should be spun off into another thread.

I just don't understand why you care if other people have obsessions you find to be unhealthy.

I agree with veekie though, this is way beyond the scope of this thread.

http://patrickmacias.blogs.com/files/otaku-power---trivia-desire-transformation-1.mp3

Pretty awesome lecture, and on point to the off topic discussion that was going on here. Otaku and Hikkikomori are beggining to become a serious issue in Japan. In a country where there are more and more elderly people, and less young people willing to have children, the problem of the Hikkikomir is a very, very serious one. Estimates indicate that there may be anywhere from 500 thousand to a million young japanese men and women locked in their rooms with no contact with the outside world.

Hikkikomori are only diagnosed as such if they don't leave their rooms and have no contact with the outside world for more than 6 months at one time. This problem compounds itself because of the way Japanese society is structured, and the families of these shut ins don't bring them to receive proper treatment because they're afraid it will bring shame to the family. [ http://japanese.lingualift.com/blog/hikikomori/ ]

But why is it that this type of obsessive compulsive behavior such as the Otaku, or the hermit nature of the behavior of the Hikkikomori, are becoming more and more common in our society? Of course, in the Western world, the problem isn't as huge as it is in Japan, but shouldn't we be concerned?

As our society progressively becomes more and more oppressive, will we not be seeing more and more of this? I wonder.

The world always had obsessive compulsiveness, but for there to exist such a widespread and large

There are several culture specific mental aberrations, but by and large it may have something with the West being a guilt based as opposed to a shame based society.

In the book "Ready player one" that group is refered to as "The Lost Million"

Apparently i was reading from one of the more optimistic estimates. http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2010/02/06/japan-has-3600000-hikikomori/ site claims that the ministry of internal affairs declared that there are 3.6 million Hikkikomoris living in Japan today. That's 1 in every 40 people, as the excerpts from 2ch note.

Interesting, when looking for that "Lost Million" you mentioned i found an article that uses the same term to define the 18-24 generation currently living in the States, that have close to no hope of finding a job.

EDIT: Sidenote. Site is filled with awesome.

I wonder if we should just start a kitty thread (or a thread for animals in general.)
