Polymorph Items? Or, 3.5 Adventure Update
« on: February 28, 2012, 10:15:22 PM »
Either is fine. I'm wanting to run Fires of Dis, but I can't seem to find the 3.5 update that was done back in 2008 on Planewalker. The page no longer exists (site does though). So I'll take that if anyone's got it. Otherwise, are there any polymorph items? All of the creatures in the adventure are polymorphed into humanoids, or other creatures, and can do it fairly often to make the PCs lower their guard. They kind of don't have that in 3.0/3.5/3.75 (Pathfinder).

Thanks in advanced.

Psychoactive Skin of the Proteus does Metamorphosis, which could be called the Psionic version of Polymorph.  But if your PC's kill one of these creatures, do you REALLY want them to have an item of at-will Polymorph as loot?
I'm not arguing, I'm explaining why I'm right.

Not an at-will one, no. I could change it up that it's cheaper because that particular one only works for evil fiends.

@Maat Mons -  I'll have a look at that.

Don't they have casters to cast Polymorph?

Nope. Barely even have casters.

No casters in Hell? Weird. you know that I meant casters to just cast the Polymorph and not casters as part of the encounters, right?
Well then, just give them Polymorph (Sp) 1/day or at will or something. Or replace an equal level (Sp) with it.

Yup. Got a ranger, cleric, soulknife, fighter, rogue, and paladin. None of them can cast it.
I was thinking of making the monsters "wish-enhanced" like in the Black Rain adventure where they gained extra abilities or higher SR. It increases the CR by 1, but oh well.

Wait... Are you talking about the PCs? 'Cause I kinda doubt that devils have levels in Paladin...

Okay, I'm on the same page now. I thought you were talking about what Kremti said regarding UMD.

As for the NPC casters with it, they need to change mid session and cancel it off themselves so it'd be moot if they had a caster put it on them, and then came to the material plane. Especially if they need to change into another form.

Just give them Polymorph as a spell-like. They are supposed to have it and more for fluff reasons than power.

Are they actually planning to turn into a giant lizard or otherwise use the full extent of Polymorph? If not, don't use a bazooka where a pistol will do. Use Disguise Self, Alter Self, or the Alternate Form special ability instead.

I just need the evil outsiders to transform and look like various types of humanoids.

The Disguise skill (and disguise self, silent image, and similar abilities) can do this.

They've got major image, but that won't do it. Might look into Disguise Self.

I'm really hating updating old modules.

Well that's not an issue. I was going to do that with my "wish-enhanced" versions, if I had to. It just stipulates in the rules that you're supposed to add CR to each creature you do that with. Just hoping for another way before going through with that.

Kevin, you're not doing it for power, are you? What can they possibly gain from being polymorphed into humanoids? Element of surprise? That's hardly worth the loss of their high attributes and some of their combat abilities. For real, no CR adjustment is needed. Just give them the ability and be done with it.
