From what I've heard, it's aimed toward younger children, so the design isn't so much for portability as it is durability.
What it needs is to be as durable as the original gameboys. Those things were friggin tanks. Like did you drop it in the tub? Meh, just let it dry. Drop it down a flight of stairs? Ha, your game didn't even reset. Pump 9 volts of power into it (it's designed for 6 btw)? Man that LED power light shined. Throw finger paint on it? Rub some dirt and gasoline on it, it'll shine right up.

Reminds me of the first Xbox... I saw someone drop one of those on their foot once. It broke most of the bones on impact
Except the XBox would stop functioning after something like that... Not the old Game Boy Brick.

But yeah, it's like... Nintendo is getting rid of the 3D and cutting the price by a LOT, so in order to actually sell any real 3DS's they need to do something stupid with it.

It still worked afterwards. The original xbox was bordering on indestructible.

There was a story a couple of years ago about one taking a 9mm round without serious structural damage (I think it still killed the console)

I recall hearing about some people who did some other durability tests for that generation of consoles, including running over them with a big rig and dropping them from something like 20 feet or so.  Only the gamecube regularly survived to be played again.

Alas, the hinges are the weakest link when it comes to the DSes (and the GBA SP).  Probably why they decided to get rid of them for the 2DS.

Yet it was the hinges that made them easily portable.
This 2DS just can not fit in a pocket.
You could easily tie it to a stick, though  :D

The original gameboy can still run games after surviving a bombing. They put that one into a museum.

I have a broken n64 that begs to disagree...

All it took was ONE fall.

Now i'm sad again, because i REALLY liked the damn thing, i played every year, even after 10+ years of ownership. Gone in a single day because of a young cousin.

WORST PART? My uncles didn't even offer to pay for repairs, my parents didn't think it was worth it because it had to be shipped off to another state and was too expensive, and ordering a new one was impossible, except if bought second hand from a collector, which is not guaranteed.

I STILL think i'm probably going to buy a near-mint one someday even if it is expensive only because i REALLY, REALLY like the damn thing and it's games.

Yeah, I've still got my original Gameboy, and even after many, many drops, bangs, and other abuse, it still runs.  Only thing that doesn't work is a single column of pixels second from the left.  Now that's quality.

Hmm, I've been all upset about my favorite game of ALL TIME getting a sequel two decades later... only to be exclusive to the 3DS, after I just got a DSi XL last year and have no desire to get a 2nd Gameboy so freaking soon, never mind the high cost.

I also seldom actually use my GB as a portable unit, aside from taking it when I fly somewhere, and even then most of the time it's plugged into a wall or such.  I mostly got it because it seemed to be where all the RPGs were moving to.

So...other than looking really stupid, this 2DS kind of appeals to me, so long as it can actually play Link Between Worlds to full functionality.  I'd still wait for a price drop, though.  And I'd still much rather they put it on the Wii U, an actual home console, like a game of the unparalleled caliber of LttP deserves.  (Plus the fact that unlike 2DS/3DS, I was actually planning to buy a Wii U anyway...)

EDIT: If they did some sort of special bundle w/ the LttP sequel for 2DS like they did there w/ Wii U and Wind Waker, it'd probably draw me in.

I really wish I could play it, but my computer is old and can't handle it, plus I'd almost certainly fall behind on my studies.  Thankfully I have a few hours each Monday and Wednesday day before class where there's no way I'd be playing, so that would work out.

One of the main reasons I'd like to play again is just to see the damage and such holy paladins can do now that Selfless Healer makes Judgment grant Holy Power, and that Sanctity of Battle lowers the CD on Holy Shock.  I wouldn't expect it to be any kind of competitive except maybe for a bit of burst when lining buffs up, but I know I'd have a lot of fun with it since I got to play that style during the Wrath/Cataclysm transition.  Exorcism spam was awesome.

It's really not, it's more like marijuana.  After doing it for the first time, you REALLY want to keep doing it, although for a lot of people there comes a point where it's like... Yeah, that's something I did... Don't really feel like doing it anymore, though.

The comparison is more along the lines of how fucking addictive it is, really.

Sure, but the thing is it's only addictive for so long... "Hey, our guild is at the endgame... again... and we're going to go raiding... again... make sure to bring the newest potions and shit... again..."

Which is why they keep shelling out expansions, right?

Plus, the game is like... 7 years old? I'm amazed it even has that much steam left in it.

I think it's 9 years old now.  But I never found it addictive in the slightest.  My brother-in-law gave me a 2 week free trial for WoW years ago, and I played it for about 10 days, getting a character to lv 20.  I uninstalled it shortly thereafter, because it just didn't interest me.  The quests were all boring and generic, the enemies were uninspired, and only the night elf starter area looked all that nice, the rest was mediocre or worse (I was playing before blood elves were added, so ...).  I just turned around, and went back to playing CoH, because that game, at least, was an MMO that had originality, good quest stories, and imaginative foes.

Terraria's 1.2 update is coming on October 1st.  I really hope it doesn't increase system requirements since my computer has had a couple problems with it here and there.
