Min/Max 3.x / Re: List of non-armor armor bonuses?
« on: May 13, 2013, 01:41:18 PM »
Not precisely what you are seeking, but the Stony Plating graft from Magic of Eberron (p. 133) gives you a point of natural armor that stacks with everything for 2800 gp and 4 HP. Similar grafts exist for plants and dragons (and probably some others - there should be a link to the grafting guide in the Handbook Index thread).

Table 6-11 on page 234 of the Magic Item Compendium gives rules for combining common effects, including putting an armor bonus on your bracers at normal cost.

2
Rules Compendium (137) sez that spellcasting creatures do require material components and sometimes select Eschew Materials. I think that this is part of the distinction between having casting and just having a few SLAs.

I would say replace the "Human Traits" line in the template with "Orc Traits" or whatever. That sidebar is very much a presentation of "hey DM, this might be a fun way to adapt the rules presented", so go nuts.

On an unrelated note, what is up with the Roving Mauler? The Aslan of the Isle of Man?

Tomb of Horrors, maybe? With a Sphere of Annihilation blocking a doorway or something like that?

How about area effects for concealment? Like obscuring mist or blizzard?

Even inanimate objects get concealment from those, so I would say that the images should benefit.

Gaming Advice / Re: Can you Charge on an extra action?
« on: March 31, 2013, 07:14:35 PM »
Being restricted to just a Move action prevents charging:
Quote from: Rules Compendium 27
Restricted Activity
If you're unable to take a full round's worth of actions on your turn, such as during a surprise round, you can charge as a standard action. In this case, you can move up to your speed rather than up to double your speed. All other rules for charging still apply.
Emphasis added.

@OP: yeah, your math and reasoning check.

<snip>
Note that since the images are not, themselves, the caster (only appearing like him), they don't have his abilities or buffs, so some miss chances would not apply to them. I'm not sure I agree with the FAQ on whether purely visual miss chance effects like Blur and Displacement should apply (if you hit an illusion of an illusion-enhanced image, you're still hitting the illusion), but it's certainly reasonable. Likewise, Blink should work fine (50% of the time the caster just plain isn't there, so neither should the illusions), but miss chances based on reactive sorts of effects (can't think of any off hand except homebrew) shouldn't function.

Shadow Cloak, Drow of the Underdark 101 lets you get concealment as an Immediate action. I would not let an image activate that, so a clever enemy might deduce which image is real even if the attack misses. I guess that would apply to most Immediate actions, actually - only the Wizard can Abrupt Jaunt out of the way, only the Psion can manifest Evade Attack, and so on.

Gaming Advice / Re: Is there a guide or handbook on Tripping?
« on: December 29, 2012, 08:06:57 AM »
Helm of Battle (MIC 111): +2 untyped, 3/day
Living Chain (MIC 53): probably should not stack with Sweeping
Confound the Big Folk (RotW 153): tactical feat usable by Small or smaller characters to trip Large or larger ones using Dex and no size bonuses

Depending on the application, you might like Curling Wave Strike, a feat from Stormwrack (p 92) that replaces the follow up attack from Improved Trip with a new trip attack against a different opponent.

Death Master from the Dragon Magazine Compendium gets an Undead Minion that works a bit like an Animal Companion.

Gaming Advice / Re: Dragon egg-laying
« on: December 27, 2012, 02:02:34 PM »

Clutches of two to five, once per year, and we're talking about a being that lives thousands of years, and has absolutely NO natural predators? Only adventurers that come to kill them for their gold?

How did they not conquer the world already?

Clearly it must be the case that the dragons have, in fact, already conquered the world. The PCs are unwitting participants in an enormous nature preserve cum theme park, while everyone else they may happen to think they meet are shape shifted dragons, halfbreeds, or illusions projected by the managers. For a small fee, dragon-citizens can immerse themselves in the park to see how people used to live.

Slightly more seriously, for the OP: if you want to cheese it out, you might try to argue that eggs that have been formed but not laid are too independent to be simply subsumed by polymorphing, and logically must transform into eggs appropriate to the new form. A sea turtle may lay dozens to hundreds of eggs in a single sitting.

I am pretty sure it just means that the concealment provided by darkness does not help against something with darkvision.

Hmm... Can a template, by RAW, be applied more than once to the same base creature?
In other words: can an Evolved Undead become even more evolved?

I searched for a while (not long, i confess) but couldn't find a rule denying or allowing it...

Generally no, but this template calls itself out as an exception.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: Players too nice, what do.
« on: December 13, 2012, 02:17:00 AM »
Ask your players to send you lists of magic items that they might like to see turn up in treasure in the next few levels. This might encourage the proper players to speak up, and has the side benefit of helping you plan.

If you are socially adept, you might try influencing them to let the person most in need of gear choose first, either subtly ("I think Alex was last to choose last time" or "Chris, this item synergizes well with your playstyle") or blatantly ("According to my notes, Taylor is currently the least geared up").

Gaming Advice / Re: Stacking Weapon Energy Damage
« on: December 07, 2012, 03:57:26 AM »
I think that the designers chose poorly when they decided to list the synergy abilities as "+1" but only to a weapon with the prerequisite property rather than as +2 with sensible upgrade clause. In the case at hand, "as" should be read "in the manner of", emphasizing that an Acidic Burst weapon continues to deal the 1d6 [Acid] from being Corrosive rather than having the base enchantment be entirely replaced by the synergy upgrade (which would suck).

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: I need Ooze. Lots of Ooze.
« on: December 05, 2012, 03:39:17 PM »
"Ooze" is a creature type if you find a comprehensive list of monsters. If you want ooze-like monsters as well, Bloodrot (HoH 140) and Blood Amniote (LM 87) are undead, and I think there is a Bone Ooze or something similar as well. Offhand, in addition to the Monster Manuals you can find oozes in Sandstorm (Brine and Lava, 178) and Frostburn (White Pudding, 147). Looking up those page numbers just now tells me that you can try the Fiend Folio (3.0 but has an official conversion).

Gaming Advice / quick incorporeality rules check
« on: December 04, 2012, 06:07:28 AM »
Here is my understanding of what happens when characters try to do various things to an incorporeal creature. Have I understood the rules correctly? Is there anything obvious that I am missing?

1) mundane sword: no effect. none. not even a flanking bonus.
2) magic sword: 50% miss chance
3) targeted with a Slow spell: affected as normal (nondamaging effect without an attack roll)
4) Hail of Stone spell on the area: 50% miss chance (physical rocks created)
5) Fireball: 50% miss chance ([Fire] is not positive or negative energy or a [Force] effect)
6) in the area of a red dragon's breath weapon: as Fireball
7) Shocking Grasp: 50% miss chance for the attack roll but not another one for the damage (only one miss chance)
8) Touch of Fatigue: 50% miss chance (nondamaging effect with an attack roll)

Did you see this one? I have found it pretty useful. I think that it is up to date for 3.5, but I had no hand in building it and could be wrong.

edit: URL fixed, sorry.

D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder / Re: Playing a character blind
« on: October 06, 2012, 12:32:13 PM »
Paranoia does a bit of this by default, but that is a very silly system. I think you could make an enjoyable one shot game like this, but I would worry about maintaining the fun of the gambit long term. A compromise alternative would be to have your players build the characters and general background and then you write a bunch of plot hooks that they do not know about due to memory loss. Bonus points if your campaign world has shapeshifters.

Swift Ready: second level spell in The Forge of War that lets you enact a Sailor Moon transformation sequence summon your combat equipment from nearby. A wand of this fills much the same niche as a Ring of Arming or the Called armor enchantment, but is much less horribly overpriced.
