My roommate just got her dream job, she's going to teach one-on-one sewing classes for a high end sewing supply store for I think around $10/hr.

Good for her as it is her dream job. But holy shit, I just realised that $10/hour is only 3p/hour more than the UK national minimum wage.  Which is, well, pretty much not enough to live on (you can claim housing benefit ans working tax credit on that much).  How much better is that as a living wage in the states?

It's my roommate.  As I was making enough money to carry both of us without any issues, there's no problem there.

Also, I have a lot of problems with that graphic.  I could afford a two-bedroom apartment on minimum wage with a 20 hour/week job when I lived in New Mexico.

I just went on my first date since my bad breakup. We had great chemistry, and she is super cute! She admitted to having a crush on me, and I'm on Cloud 9. I haven't felt this happy in months.

brb moving to new mexico

A two bedroom here in Memphis is at least 600$/mo with a student discount. 7.25$ x 20 is 145 a week minus about 17% (no dependents claimed is about this, we don't have a state income tax) in taxes is 120$, or about 480$ a month. That wouldn't happen here without some a lot of extra green being thrown your way to cover the rest of rent, food, gas, utilities, internet/cable/phone, any other bills you might have. Two people could swing it, but I think 3 would be the minimum for me in this situation. Given, that's IN the city (generally cheaper to live in the city here) IN a neighborhood worth living in.

That said, a few years ago, I did live with some friends in a party house in the MexiGhetto. It was huge, two big living rooms, two full bedrooms (complete with full bathrooms), another full bathroom and two more rooms we used for bedrooms. 900$ a month between 3 to 6 people and then utilities were only about 400$. So 1300$/3 is about 325$ a month, by 6 it's 217$. That said, we ended up tearing that place apart and most of us ended up hating the girl we were subrenting from (illegally, I think, but whatever).

minimum wage graphic

(click to show/hide)

So, let's say in PA which is what I'm familiar with, if the minimum wage is 7.75 as bhu claims...and someone is working an 89 hour week...they make 2988ish a month. In a 40 hour week it's $1343/month.  My girlfriend has a two bed apartment in the University City that costs $700 and it is lovely.

I think that map might be a gross exaggeration.

(rounded) 8$ x 40hrs = 320 x 4.2 (to account for 5 week months, and a guess) 1344(?)

minus about 30% to pay 'the man' rounded to 940$ -$700 rent. = 240. if your rent includes all utilities your almost ok... if not...

Net vs. gross pay.

Yeah. You made that much money. Your take home at that point is going to be around $950/month. Say a one bedroom apt is $550 (given a two was $700 in your example), then you have $400 for the month. $150 for power, gas, water, internet (being really, really conservative with $150), leaves $250. $250 for groceries, gasoline, your car payments / maintenance / Insurance and everything else that comes up.
No, that is not enough.

My average income before anything is taken out is ~$1500/month. My take-home is ~$1,200 a month. My bills, with my car paid off but with full coverage on insurance, are ~$950 a month, not counting i spend over $100 on gasoline a month, and my groceries. I barely make ends meet (though I do) making $2 and change over minimum wage. I live very minimalist too.

I would agree that the chart can get really twisted up by lumping in the averages in between populated areas with non, taking a whole stat at a time, but what do you expect of statistics on a large scale? This statistic wouldn't have the same living wage expense from one burrough to the next, much less city to city, or city to town.

But the point is: Minimum Wage <<<<<<< (very much less than) <<<<<<< Living Wage.

Apartments where I live require you to make three times the monthly rent to sign on.  In other words if your rent is 500$, you have to take home 1500$ just to get accepted.   Which means you need to make about 2000$ a month before taxes.

The girl I went out with wants to be exclusive--and so do I!

Not only that, but I hung out with my ex-girlfriend, and, as soon as I started talking about this new girl, all of the sexual tension between us dissolved and we started talking like best buddies--because we were indeed best friends in addition to lovers before the breakup. She wants to be just friends, and so do I, and I actually think it will work, since I am not interested in her romantically!

I have two wonderful women in my life who both care for me. Things are finally looking up after months of sorrow.
