"Ladies first," Chuck says, and before she can react, he grabs Viona firmly by the hand and lowers her down as far as he can reach before allowing her to drop to the floor below.  The drop should be easier for her this way.  Besides, he wants to make sure she goes in first and doesn't try any funny business.

Looking to Johnson with a wry smile, the large man asks, "You need a hand as well?"

Lily takes one last look around but sees nothing out of the ordinary, nothing that would spark intrigue anyways. She does wonder what is behind the other door but they appeared to have found a safe way in already. She lowers herself down as much as she can in the narrow vent and drops. "Whoa"! Ten feet is higher than it looks. And Hudson had made it look entirely too easy. She lands, rolling forward to a crouch. A little harder than she would have liked but she couldn't complain too much, she appeared to be unharmed.

Chuck grabs Viona without warning and begins lowering her down. "How rude"! Viona says a little louder than she should. She looks quite unhappy but makes no move to stop him.

Viona falls the last couple feet and lands ungracefully, falling on her bottom. "Ouch", she groans but she stands up on her own and appears to be unharmed.

Johnson smiles at Chuck's request. "Oh I'm too heavy in my gear. I think this aging man can still take a fall or two. Let's find out". He says and Chuck gets the impression he is too prideful. Despite that Johnson continues to move with the grace of a soldier, dropping into the vent neatly he lands heavily in a crouch, one hand on the floor . He stands up and flips the visor up on his helmet to reveal he's actually smiling.

He looks up. "You next big boys", he teases.

Once Johnson is clear, Chuck swings his legs out into the open hatch and drops down to the floor below.

Chuck lands heavily with a grunt, hitting the floor and rolling forward ungracefully. He stands up and dusts himself off though nonchalantly.

Johnson smiles knowingly at him and in that moment Chuck realizes he probably hurt himself falling as well. Johnson looks up to the vent. "You're the last Builder".

Builder looks down at the others and swallows. Well, it wasn't very far down he convinced himself, he had probably dropped off higher at some point in his construction days... problem was he couldn't remember when. Lowering himself down he drops and lands steadily. Yep...not too bad.

Johnson nods. "We're here. An upper floor of the Hive. The Black Rook probably knows we're here too. We gotta shut it down or we're toast depending on what room we walk into...also the Infected are rampant here. Time is running out, we need to move".

"As much as I would love to sit and rest, I cant say I would like to be found by this psychotic computer or those monsters. I take it Johnson will be leading us through? we need to form up, and move out. time is of the essence. ill take up the rear with Builder, Lily keep an eye on Viona in the center and Chuck take up the front with Johnson." with that said Hudson checks his magazine replacing any missing bullets in the clip doing the same with his other pistol.

when the group moves out Hudson keeps watch above, and behind them to make sure nothing sneaks up on them.

"Aye," Lily says. She steps up toward Viona and mutters quietly, "You'd better not start anything down here that you don't want us to finish. You're on our side now and I will not waste my time on you if I think you're betraying. Time to prove yourself." Lily asks, in a normal tone again, of both Viona and Johnson, "What alternate exits do we have, if any? And where do we shut down the Black Rook? Like Hudson said... time is of the essence."

Without a word, Chuck moves across the room to take point next to Johnson.  Any reservations he may have about leaving an escape route are outweighed by the need for stealth.  He stands next to the door, nodding to Johnson to signal his readiness.

All the off-white, soulless colors make Hudson's eyes feel blurry but he sees no immediate threats. More importantly his keen hearing picks up nothing....nothing...nothing. With a start Hudson realizes there is no static noise here, the silence is literally deafening and eerie, almost worse than hearing anything. He tiptoes up to the door with the others.

At Lily's words Viona rolls her eyes. "Save your threats for cretins girl. If I start anything you won't have time to finish it. You should practice your recall, as it's been stated numerous times already there is two ways to shut down the Black Rook, by directly accessing his main frame in the central computation system or by shutting down the Hive generators which will cause him to reboot but only 95% percent of the way, he won't come back online without manual assistance. As for exits, if we can gain control of the Hive we can exit through any of the thousand elevators that go back up to the main floor".

As she finishes Johnson nods. "That's about it". Chuck nods to Johnson and he flips his visor down and hefts his weapon. Everyone pauses for several seconds before they realize only one person can open the door.

Viona smiles satisfactorily and approaches the keypad. "Get used to depending on me this time around. In here brains will take you further than brawn...or at least keep you alive longer". She pulls out a small multi-tool and pries open the keypad face. Underneath are the naked buttons and several wires of different colors along with microchips and other electronic components. As she works, cutting a wire and soldering a microchip she talks. "The Black Rook will know this door is being remotely opened. Once we open it we should move. Think of it as Sauron's eye, if you attract it's attention he will look towards Gondor. If we get out of it's sight range quick enough we may be able to trick it into thinking we were only a glitch, however this is only theory", she finishes as she punches in several 0's into the keypad.

The door slid open. Johnson looked out into the hallway both ways. "Clear", he mutters quitely.

"Move". Viona hisses, "doesn't matter where, just fucking move".

Johnson leaves the hallway, followed by the party as they slink down the hall way as quick as possible to an unknown destination. Here, much like the upper levels is a sickeningly distorting hall way that connects to other identical hall ways which connect to doors which all look the same. It was enough to make one think they had found purgatory.

With Chuck and Johnson in the lead they continued on down the same hallway, which seemed to stretch forever on. They moved quickly for nearly five minutes before the hallway finally ended with one of the classic steel double doors. To each side, more hallways awaited.

"Are we clear or do we keep going"? Johnson asked.

Before he could answer the door behind him opened by itself. Behind it nothing stood but an empty room but a voice emerged from the uncanny silence and it seemed to come from everywhere at once. It was a male voice, a tenor, the voice of a man that was on the brink of insanity.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all? Why it is I? Oh do tell, mmhmm. Come into my web said the spider to the fly. Come inside or die, Die, DIE! Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Viona paled, which to her looked blanched white. This was followed by trembling. "He...he knows".

Hudson mutters just loud enough to be heard by the others "this is why you don't give a computer the ability to think on its own..."

My audio sensors heard that....heh heh, how very observant of you Hudson. Congratulations on that purple medal by the way in the middle east.

Oh yes, my facial recognition software is even more impressive than my audio sensors. I've already tapped into the databases of the local government and am increasing my reach with every second. I have each of your ID's here along with some basic information of what you do and just a tad bit more on Hudson, his fault for being so decorated really.

Chuck Finley, fire fighter, certified EMT.

Robert Jacobson, structural constructionist.

Lily O'Keef, private detective.

And ahhhh, Viona...welcome back my sweet. Are you here to stay this time? Ah ha ha ha ha!

Well will you be so rude as to deny my invitation?

The doors shuddered closed before opening fully again as if to remind you it's there.

Hudson looks around feeling those electronic eyes on him and speaks aloud. "how bout a friendly wager with you Rook. We play this game you obviously want us to. So why not make it worth our while? We win you give us the cure and you shut yourself down. You win and well we would be dead if you won and you get to continue on this psychotic rampage you've started. How does that sound to you?"

And shut myself down? No, no, I don't think I will do such a thing, not with my ever increasing power.

...but this game you speak of intrigues me. I do like games. One of the first things I did upon becoming sentient was roll up characters for a game called "Dungeons and Dragons". Perhaps you are familiar with it? No matter. I will bargain with you if that is your wish, killing you out right would be too easy and boring.

I will take your wager, with my own conditions. If you win I let you leave here alive with the vaccine you desire. If you lose you obviously lose your life. Let's not waste any time shall we?

Suddenly the door slams closed and you hear an audible metal lock slide closed inside. All around you up and down the hall ways you hear the same sound as doors lock and block you from entering or escaping. What follows is silence which is then followed by a slight hissing.

Do you hear that? That's the sound of a neuro-toxic gas entering the hallways. It takes a couple minutes to do it's job but it does it well. You have only a couple minutes to several at best to pass your first test. Now let's see...in the stories these adventurers are usually challenged at the door by a riddle and so I think that shall be appropriate. We'll start simple.

Wisest of dragons, to the meekest of kin,
their search for me, their final sin.
For many in question, I may not exist,
yet, the appeal of my being, they can not resist.
While many hunt for me, I cause others fear,
I am what you need to gain entry here

As the hissing continues you begin to see a light mist in the air. The Black Rook really is flooding the hall way with some type of gas. If what he says is true you have only minutes to answer his riddle...or die.

No. 20 second penalty loss. The gasses begin to hiss out the walls even faster. Ah ha ha ha ha ha! Time is ticking my mice!

"Aww shit, I ain't good with stuff like this", Johnson says, his voice beginning to sound shaken. Viona was still paralyzed with fear, pale, and looked as if she would faint any moment.

Now don't think too deeply, the Black Rook mocks you, the answer like yourselves could be quite simple. Ah ha ha ha!

While many hunt for me, I cause others fear, I am what you need to gain entry here.... she thinks to herself. Hmm, a simplistic answer... "Could it be truth?"
As the word exits her mouth, Lily immediately thinks that is probably too simple to be the answer. She hopes the Black Rook is bluffing about the fatal gas, but with the sound of his insanity that is most likely not the case. Her heart rate increases despite her attempts to control it.

I...that's actually a pretty rational answer after analyzing the riddle again.

But it's wrong. But it's such a good answer I almost wish it were correct. Penalty averted.
The hissing of the gases slow down but the gases continue to flow steadily out of the ceiling as before.

So let's see... now if you about a minute and twenty seconds before delirium, unconsciousness, and then death. Ah ha ha ha ha! Surely you have not come this far to give up now!

Hudson murmurs the riddle to quietly once more repeating it to himself then says "i am what you need to gain entry here... would the answer to this riddle be so simple that it is answer itself?

Suddenly the gases stop hissing. Within seconds vents in the ceiling open up and fans are heard...the gas is dispersing. And just in time, the party started to feel light headed.

I did tell you the answer was more simple than you could imagine...congratulations Hudson. "I am what you need to gain entry here"... The answer.

The doors unlock and slide open, revealing the room again. Are you ready for the next challenge? Continue on to the vaccine and we shall soon know.
