Galadren's eyes light up at the sight of the chest's contents.
Eager to be on his way back out of this place again though, he is quick to distribute the contents.

"Thespias, I think you could make the best use of the dagger.  Tanthalus, why don't you hold on to this vial with the others.  Dunor - think your pack can hold a few more coins?"

Galadren looks around at his new friends and the two latest people they had rescued.

"Let's start making our way back - cautiously.  Shandien - mind scouting the way back out with me?"

As soon as the two of them are ahead of the group and out of earshot, Galadren begins to practically run ahead, back to the spider room.

"We need to get Kartanis's body down and out of sight before Thurnan gets there and sees it!"

Galadren hisses frantically.  Assuming they get to the body without incident, Galadren hurridly saws at the webbing still holding the poor guard captain's husk to the wall with his dagger, and then starts dragging it to an old of the way corner of the room.  Hopefully with Shandien's help.

"Forgive me old friend."

Galadren grunts once his is accomplished, as he contemplates one final act.  Reaching down, Galadren works at one of the elf's fingers with his dagger, severing it.  Emptying his belt pouch into his backpack of the few coins it contains, he wraps the finger in the belt pouch, and then secures that in the backpack as well.  Breathing heavily, he looks around and seems content, if not entirely happy with the grim work.

"This will have to do for now."

Backtracking your path, you find it is clear of any new goblins, or worse, though you do hear doors close or faint footsteps that tell you that you can run into something at any moment. After a few tense moments you all reach the outside. Darkness was near when you first emerged and now it blankets much.

"I thought I would never seen the light of the Moon Maiden again." Jalissa says.

You reach the copse of trees and find the woman you left there earlier, still sitting chattering amongst the dense boughs. Too weary, she has yet to even light a fire for herself.

The copse of trees if the ideal place to rest away from prying eyes. Made better when Galadren uses his flint to create a fire using no fuel and lights the area.

Jalissa helps Tanthalus tend to the feverish woman explaining, "Her name is Mirtalla, she is a baker in town. Her fever is advanced." she worriedly looks to the elf cleric, "Do you know any rituals of your faith that will cure diseases such as this? I fear it will be the only way now."

The evening wears on and Thurnan repeatedly asks about the whereabouts of his father. A situation someone will need to address soon as he begins to consider going back in himself to look for his father claiming, "My da said he would escape and come for me, if he didn't get out yet then he is still down there." The boy is clearly brave for someone so young, but would not survive the dangers long.

More than a few times, groups of goblinoids emerged from the ruins and returned, likely searching out your whereabouts. They never get close enough to see the light of your fire, thanks to the illusion granted by the magical flint. Everyone is able to rest somewhat less miserably away from the heat of the fire; though the heat of the sun is not adding to it, the weather is still sweltering.

Over the night, Galadren works on his new crossbow, making sure that he is able to take it apart and put it back together again should it need to be repaired in the field.  He also took a few practice shots with it, and was satisfied that the sights were accurate.  Noticing Thurnan's restlessness, Galadren went over to the boy and examined him critically for a moment before kneeling down beside him as he pulled out his old crossbow.

"Hey there Thurnan.  I'm an old friend of your father's - Galadren Tatharanc.  Did he ever talk about me?"

Galadren holds up the crossbow.

"Did your father show you how to use one of these?"

If not Galadren shows him how to use the light-weight winch to reload and arm the crossbow, how to look down the sights to line up a target, how to only breathe a half-breath just before pulling the trigger.

"I found your father down there in the crypts."

Galadren said, hoping that in his excitement the boy wouldn't notice how tight Galadren's breathing had suddenly become.  Some lies were unforgivable - Galadren could only hope that it saved the boy's life.

"When I freed him, the only thing he could think about was finding you.  Even though he himself was injured."

That was true enough - but here came the lie.

"But there were other people down there with him.  Townsfolk, some of them hurt as well.  They wouldn't make it out here alone, without someone to protect them.  So I convinced your father that he had to escort them back to town.  And he went because he was captain of the guard, and he had sworn to protect those people.  And he only left because I *promised* him that I would find you and keep you safe."

Galadren turned his head away to nod at Mirtalla and Jalissa, hoping the motion would keep his tears out of the boy's sight.

"Those two need protecting.  I can't do it because I have to go back in there tomorrow and find anyone else that they've captured.  But like your father, you can make the sacrifice to protect others, even if it keeps you away from your family a little longer.  Can you do that?  Can you stay here and protect the camp while I'm away?"

Galadren offers the boy his old crossbow.

Tears well in the boy's eyes but still looks at Galadren shrewdly, sensing the elf is covering something up. Though he accepts his new role without question, knowing it is what his father would want him to do.

He takes instruction well and handles the crossbow well for a beginner, even hitting a targeted tree with several shots. Placated for the moment he settles into his job of guarding the others until he finally falls asleep for the night.

Sevenday, First Ride of Eleasis

Each relieves another in turn on the watch and the night slips along. In the short hours of the early morning, before the sun has even begun to hint at the horizon, the  party sets back out for the ruins entrance. Carefully picking their way again down the stairs. This time, there is but one guard in the entry chamber, easily dispatched by a creeping Dunor lingering until the goblin was distracted and then slipping his sword into its back quietly.

Galadren sighs and shrugs.

"Probably - but then we'll be a hundred miles away back in town, and his relatives can keep him safe.  Besides - I intend for Thurnan to see his father again.  Just as soon as I can find a skilled enough cleric."

Galadren frowns as a thought occurs to him.

"Clerics can still bring people back from the dead, right?"

Either way, he couldn't focus on that right now.  Hefting his new crossbow, Galadren set out cautiously down the hallway beside Dunor.

"Shall we check out the rest of this level?  I want to see what that magic painting was all about."

"Yes, some still can." Shandien adds in joining the conversation. "Though it usually takes one of a great amount of power and requires a decent amount of gold. Neither of which is usually found in abundance these days." he frowns thinking back to the death he couldn't repair but after a moment puts it from his mind.

The Genasi shrugs at the suggestion of where to go next, busy with considering the way Galadren posed his question. "I know Elves are long lived, but are their memories really that short?"

Dunor stays quiet. He has nothing of much worth to add regarding clerics and their faith magic, other than tales he has heard. Even then, his own memory was still spotty, and he was becoming fairly certain that patches of his missing memories had been filled in with those of... someone else. He tries not to think of it.

Yet, the thoughts bubbled to the surface all too readily.

Dunor recalled growing up in the north, looking up to his father, the great warrior. He also remembered growing up in the Nelanthar Isles, aside a brother, who would grow into a strong and noble Paladin. In all of his memories, there is a substantial amount of loss and grief. Recent events seem only to follow a disturbing trend.

He pushes the thoughts from his mind, more successfully this time; however, Dalanath yet seems to prowl ahead, showing Dunor where to scout.

The warrior sneaks up, with Galadren astride, to scope out the next room.

Tanthalus follows along, not sure what to contribute to this conversation.  These people have already seen too much pain.

Thespias follows, not having anything to ad to the conversation. Over the last few days, the Halflings natural joviality has had little reason to show itself.

The group moves along through the darkened passageways and rooms they had cleared. Their hostile hosts have yet to clear away the bodies of the dead, though many look picked over.

You reach the room with the magical tapestry. It is clearly a construct of magic as it sheds its own dismal light and hangs in the room by no apparent cords and has no clear fabric. The image upon it, is that of a sinister castle in the midst of a fetid bog. It flickers with each ripple as though the cloth of the tapestry flows subtly in an unfelt breeze.

"Why would anyone want to hang that in their crypt?" Shandien says upon seeing the flickering image.

"The same kind of guy that kidnaps a kid to suck the life out of them?"

Galadren says in response to Shandien's question off-handly, while studying the painting itself, hoping that perhaps he could recognize the castle or it's environs.  Perhaps that would be a clue as to why this was here.

As you stand studying the image, you notice that along with the flickering the image itself appears alive. Upon the closer examination you see that marsh grasses move slowly as with a slow breeze and the cloudy sky above the castle moves subtly. Soon you become aware of something else that moves out of the water at the edge of the image and bursts forth from it. Sickenly colored in a brownish orange, like something regurgitated after a long night of drinking and given form, the gloppy mass slithers out into the room menacingly.
